Hi I have problems with my hands too unfortunately its a a part of PSP one thing u have to do is keep your hand/hands working/moving. I similarly was considering a knee replacement at the time of diagnosis of PSP Dec 2011,so I did not have this surgery - it would depend on you needs but its perhaps not advisable as the anaesthetic would have effects on your nervouse system. mary tea13

Mum has trouble with her left hand. in fact I haven't seen her use it for many months and she sometimes gets a frozen shoulder that side now. I think the answer to your question lies in the fact that no two brains are the same. I was watching a programme called the brain doctors recently and they said that everyone' brain has a different layout. So also if you realise there are several types of PSP-including that with Lewy Body Dementia- it all makes for a mixed cluser of issues with common issues involved at different levels. For example my mum has only had trouble with swallowing since she went into end stage whereas some people get that earlier.

My mother in law can no longer move her right hand or arm, she is in pain all the time from it and its permanently numb. Dcotor said its all down to the PSP and the fact she is so inactive. She can no longer walk or stand and is wheel chair bound, she is unable to even turn in bed at night. Her left arm is now starting to go the same and the only thing she has been given is pain patches which aren't helping much. Thank God for this forum, don't know what we'd do without it.

Part of the PSP name is Palsy. Palsy, as I understand it, refers to a weakness. Perhaps the PSP is affecting your hand by making it weak. I do know for a fact that PSP usually affects one side of the body more than the other. Perhaps that is your weak side from PSP?

About the knee surgery. It is well known that some PSP patients go under anathesia and afterward never get back to the level they were before. I have a relative who is an anathesologist and I asked him and he confirmed it. He said that is some cases with alzheimer's and dementia diseases patents don't recover well from anathesia. Some do recover to where they were but many do not. Therefore I've resolved that any surgery for my dear wife Sharyn will not be done unless there is no other choice. Maybe others can confirm this about surgery.

A TUBE R WAS PUT DOWN MY HTROAT COS FO THE SWALLLWOIGN PROBLEM SO A SORE THROAT AFTERWARDS

NMBUT I WOUDL GO FOR HTE KNEE

SURGERY IF YOU FEEL I ETEWOULD IMPROVE YOUR LIFE

My mum's left arm and hand were very rigid and stiff in the final couple of years. I used to rub ibuprofen topical gel into the shoulder and arm, and this helped bring some life back into it. Do not know if simply the massaging or the gel helped the most. I do not know if this was arthritis or PSP, or arthritis caused by falling and injuring the arm so much?

so plz be careful as everyone say sto em btu i still fall several times aday despit ethe warnimngs
