My husband has P.S.P. and is struggling to eat. He coughs when he eats sometimes worse than others. He is difinately better with food with lots of gravy or sauces. Just wondered if anybody had some different dishes for a change for him

Hi, the PSPA sells a soft food cook book called ‘Under the Magnolia Tree’. This book has recipes from top celebrity chefs specifically designed to help with swallowing. If you would like to order a copy you can do so on our website shop.pspeur.org/collections..., by telephoning 01327 322419 or sending an email to shop@pspeur.org. I hope this helps. Vegetarian cottage pie is nice and pretty soft especially if the vegetables are cut up small...this is a recipe we like....
Hi Alfredlake - If you have a hand held stick blender, it allows you to create a soft meal with most dishes. Might not be as appealing as the regular fare but it made Mom feel like she was sharing a meal with us, just a bit different. It also allowed her to keep some of her favorites. When it came to soups and such to thicken them based on her choking level, we added thickit. One of her favorite recipes was very easy to make: Beef Mac...1 lb ground beef break into very small pieces, don't brown it too much so it remains soft. Add in 1/2 C of diced onions, smaller dice for choking. Add in one can on diced tomatoes, and one can of cream of mushroom soup. Simmer to soften all ingredients. Cook 1 lb. box on macaroni, elbow, bow ties, shells, anything small in nature. Drain pasta, and blend with meat mixture. Cheese shredded on top is optional. I eliminated that since Mom tended to also have a constipation issue. Pour all into oven/microwave safe pyrex dish. This freezes well and reheats well. You can also substitute no salt items or other ground meats. Good luck....Kathy
Hi Alfredlake.....there is also a book called " Soft Options " by Rita Greer which gives lots of information & recipes for those who have difficulty chewing. I got it from WH Smith quite a while ago but had to order it. I've not used it yet as Frank is still managing with ordinary food to a certain extent as long as I cut it up small or sometimes mash it up.
Take care & try to keep smiling.

And don't forget to ask your speech & language therapist (SLT) who will advise on types of food that are best for you/or to avoid. The SLT can also refer you to a dietician if required. If you do not have a SLT you can ask your GP to refer you.
