My dearest friend was finally diagnosed a couple of years ago. Fortunately she has long term care insurance and a caregiver as well as her husband, who has really stepped up. He has fallen with her a couple of times, once through a glass door, and protected her with his body. He tries to keep her involved with friends and neighbors.

She has been slowly going down hill for a number of years, but is now completely wheelchair bound, cannot feed herself or speak.

It’s heartbreaking seeing her like this. She is an educated woman, with 2 Masters Degrees, a PhD, has written books and taught at universities. I don’t know how much she is aware of, but I know, because we talked about this, she wouldn’t want this life.

ScouseusaHi. Going through your post I am reminded of - a friend in need is a friend indeed. Please first of all make her a member of the related associations such as this one. Please try to keep her motivated. I would like to know what subjects is your friend is a PhD, and Masters in. I request that to see how best could she be encouraged to utilise her knowledge and experience to uplift her condition. Best wishes. Please make sure while transferring her from bed to wheelchair etc. she must not be allowed to fall. Best wishes to you, your friend and her devoted husband.

it all sounds too familiar 🙏 having the carer support in place is incredible and a friend like you.

This is so important, my dad has a few friends who come to see him every week and it brings a huge amount of joy and needed mental stimulation. It’s sad as some of his “friends” don’t visit as they clearly don’t want to see him in his condition, this is upsetting.

Your time with your friend is very precious and I am certain both she and her husband appreciate this very much, keep spending the time 🙏😀

it’s rotten, isn’t it? I’m a PSP sufferer - currently chair bound also but able to feed myself and can talk a bit, though softly. I’m nowhere near as intelligent as your friend but I often wish I could go to bed and not wake again when I think about what’s to come.
