Mum's on going double vision. : I start with... - PSP Association
Mum's on going double vision.

So sorry to read this and sight can be impacted. Mums consultant also advised us she was unable to look up or down so where her food was placed became really critical (no longer an issue as on puree food and unable to feed herself). She is unable to communicate but they believe she has poor eye sight now and in recent months rarely opens her eyes. She is also very light sensitive inside and especially outdoors so we got her lens amended via the optician. We found specsavers who did a home eye test as mum is in a nursing home and has been for over three years now (diagnosed PSP August 2021). PSP association also suggested prism glasses which they sent us but she kept taking them off so we returned them. PSP association are really helpful for advice and support if you aren’t already using them.
Double vision, blurred vision and restricted vertical and horizontal gaze are common. If things progress do seek assistance from the opticians for prism lenses as they can help. Also transitional lenses help with changing light and Cocoon fit over glasses are great for helping with the light sensitivity. As gaze is restricted think about where things are positioned ,often things further away such as the tv can be seen but close up more difficult because if the restricted gaze and possible difficulties bending head downwards so worth testing by moving a plate or cup slightly forward and back, left and right just to get ideal position and height can make a difference so too can raising things at a slight angle in front of the person. We have a tray table that can rise up at angles like an easel. We also bought a magnifying glass on a stand that can go over the tray table
my husband also has double and blurry vision. He has prism glasses which were a bit $$$ and work only at a certain distance. Reading is impossible. Sadly, it is part of the disease with not a lot of options to manage. His eyes also water a lot. He has eyedrops to manage that aspect - both prescription and OTC. It’s definitely frustrating and sad to see. The Dr did recommend the eyepatch but my husband said he can manage without it.
Best wishes to you and your mom. You will find a way through, no doubt.
I get amazing results from the ophthalmology dept at our local hospital (Southend on Sea). My husband started to see double about a year ago and GP referred him - various sight tests were done. There are 2 types of double vision: image are side to side and one image on top of the other. After trying various stick on prisms, one worked v well and so he had to test them for 2 months to see if they worked. We then bought a new pair of specs and the prism was incorporated into the lens. Fast forward to end of ‘24 when his sight had worsened and we repeated the process again. The orthoptists at the hospital are great and so helpful …. so we soldier on until the next time!
My late husband had deteriorating eye issues and I wasted a lot of money on various glasses via Specsavers which were of no help. The PSPA since then has produced a very good leaflet to take into Opticians about The Eyes and PSP as many practitioners really have very little knowledge about PSP. Eyesight + lots of other aspects will need very regular reassessment in how to help. It's a very rocky road.
Hi,
Ruth has had the same problem of double vision for many years. We use these patches on one lens of her glasses and switch it over every few days (or when she requested it). on eBay - Double Vision Patches for glasses - Amblyopia/Intractable Diplopia ebay.co.uk/itm/112173809733.
