As anyone else had hearing problem with PSP my husband as been in hospital for a chest infection also kidney infection then got Covid he’s now lost all his mobility which wasn’t good before but also his hearing is so poor I’m having to shout it wasn’t like that before he went in hospital so was wondering is this is part of the condition? Would be grateful if someone could tell me Thank you .

Not sure if it’s the CBD or old age -probably a mix, but you have to speak very slowly, loudly and clearly to mum. She’s always refused to wear a hearing aid before she got CBD and it has deteriorated over time. I think her needing you to talk slowly is more the CBD as she is very slow now at processing information, needs to check things back, and answers very slowly.

My husband had PSP, early in the process I took him to a hearing test and they removed large amounts of ear wax from his ear, his hearing issues were resolved.

Mum had the same problem. Before her PSP symptoms got really bad she had very expensive, high tech hearing aids fitted which worked very well. She also had heat ears suctioned regularly. When her health deteriorated she complained of not being able to hear at all. The audiologist said it was her brain not recognising sound. She recommended having music playing on the radio to try and stimulate mum’s hearing.

My husband was already deaf and wearing hearing aids before PSP but it made life difficult for him as his fingers could no longer manage the controls, even with a remote control, so I had to fit and adjust them for him. He would often get a build up of wax so then I had to put drops in his ears before he could have microsuction. Perhaps your husband just has a wax build up, it is worth checking with your GP.

He would listen to his favourite CDs every morning and that was the only way to get him to look relaxed- we were delighted when he would be clearly trying to sing along- even though speech was almost impossible otherwise. Frank Sinatra saved the day so often for us.

God bless you

A good point about ear wax. I think earwax is more likely to build up in CBD/ PSP just like dry eyes and blocked/ runny noses. It’s just another of those things where the normal balance stops working. I’ve had to push and push to get the nursing home to regularly use ear spray. Until I pushed they had never even thought about the need to arrange for someone to visit the home to do ear cleaning!

Thank you I’m going to get some more ear spray today I’ve also asked the doctor to send a home visit for a hearing test as I can’t get my husband out of the house because no ramps have been put in place yet for his wheelchair, Thank you for replying it’s always good to know people are out there in the same situation.

I was just getting ready to write about this when I saw it again on my e-mail. I've noticed in the past couple of weeks that my husband is saying, "Huh?" every time I say something. He didn't have a hearing problem before. He's been sick, I think, for a couple of years, but only diagnosed since March 2023.
