My husband’s trials are over

Dear all

I recently posted on this site asking for advice on whether or not to insert a PEG. Terry had gone into a hospice for a short respite stay but had been deteriorating and when he was admitted he was barely able to swallow and was also very drowsy. He was increasingly slumped either to one side or forwards. The doctors advised to not insert the PEG and after seeking further advice and on reflection I decided that this was the kindest way. He was unable to return home and my family and I accepted that. He for a while had been unable to communicate even by gestures. They inserted a syringe driver for pain relief and after a week he passed away. He was very comfortable and peaceful and the staff were kind and caring. We were very lucky that he had this end of life care as I know that some others are not as fortunate.

Thankyou for your comments and I’m sorry I wasn’t able to reply to all your messages individually but this all happened much quicker than we imagined.

All the best and wishing you all strength in your journey.

Sincere regards

Elena

There is no need to apologise on this site. We all know how things can change rapidly. I am glad to hear that Terry had good end of life care as it makes it easier to deal with. Now you have to take care of yourself as after being a super hero for him for so long life will feel so different. Love and hugs to you and your family. AliBee x

I am so sorry to hear about your sad loss, but it's good to hear that Terry was comfortable in his last days.Let yourself grieve. You don't have to be strong now. You need to be kind to yourself. You have given so much of your time and energy looking after Terry and I am sure that you were willing to do so, but everything has changed and you need to give yourself time to adapt, taking one day at a time.

It has taken me a long time after my loss, to begin to move forward, concentrating on happy times past, rather than my bereavement.

My husband is in my heart and my mind and always will be.

Grief is the price we pay for love. I am sure that you will agree with me that it is worth it.

Big hug. Rx
