throat noises

My husband has PSP and for some time now makes strange and sometimes very annoying throat sounds. Sometimes when he is eating, brushing teeth, or just watching TV. It almost seems like he is holding his breath a little too when he makes these sounds. Anyone else having this experience-any advise?? Thanks

I was thinking to ask the same or similar question, my mother in law makes strange sounds. I would describe it as wailing and happens mostly when she tries to speak. We fear her speech is nearly gone

How is your husband's speech? I suppose the sounds are out of their control.

My husband grunts and moans all the time. I’ll ask if he’s ok. And he doesn’t even know he’s doing it. During the night he will wail out sometimes. Scares me to death. My husbands speech is getting lower. I can’t hardly hear him sometimes.

I was diagnosed with PSP a year and a half ago with symptoms going for over 3 years.

Frequently my throat and chest muscles tighten and don’t I don’t realize it but I’ve been holding my breath. It’s kinda like compressing your breath in your lungs.

When I become aware I’m holding my breath I’ll relax the muscles but they don’t release smoothly. It feels like the compressed air in the lungs passing rapidly over the still tight larynx muscles make a grunting type noise. Fairly quiet at this point but not always.

Everyone is different but it’s possible the same bodily mechanics are going on with your loved one but more exaggerated.

Sounds very similar to my wife, after taking a breath and holding it she exhales very slowly and murmurs, sometimes she apologizes as she does saying sorry repetitively. As she cannot speak now it is odd to hear her voice again.

NC, My wife yells out in her sleep, makes strange grunting noises, clears her throat (but still has no swallow issues) and talks back to the TV during tense moments in a show. From what I have read, mostly here, this is all common and rather benign behavior with PSP. Some of it can be attributed to emotional lability, like the inappropriate laughing and crying the PSP sufferers undergo.
