My mum suffers from PSP. She's been experiencing frequent chills and discomfort for the last few days. We noticed dark brown urine in the urobag and the catheter tube clogs often due to crystals, mucus, and red blood cells. We consulted a urologist who ruled out the possibility of UTI. Not sure what to do. Can someone please suggest something?
I'm really worried and it's difficult to see her in pain.
That all does seem very worrisome. I would seem to me that she has some kind of infection. Chills suggest it. How did the urologist rule out a UTI? Dark urine alone generally indicates inadequate fluid intake. Can she, does she drink?
Hi easterncedar: Thanks for replying. Her urologist prescribed some investigations and we got them done. He reviewed the reports and told us that it isn’t a UTI. We feed her with the PEG tube. Her liquid intake is fine. We give her electrolyte powder every other day and we’ll begin giving cranberry juice soon. I hope that it makes her feel better. We got another test done yesterday and are waiting for the reports. We’re planning to consult another urologist and go for a second opinion.
I don't have any experience with PEG feeding, but hope you get some good answers soon from the doctors. good luck
I am no doctor, just a PSP sufferer, 79, and had crystals in urine aged 22 and healthy. Likely cause: kidney stones with me. Main reason is probably lack of fluid intake, so I now plug 2 litres water a day! Dehydration is critical in older people. Timbow
Another possibility ..... if any chance of a UTI. Rather than the chemical drugs prescribed, you could look into a 'gentler' option: Mannose D. Its a monosaccharide, which (in UK) I find by googling 'Sweet Cures Waterfall D-mannose'. Very effective, but may take wee bit longer to work. Good luck with this whole rabbit warren of advice, and the condition - which keeps changing! Tim x
Agree with Timbow, sounds like kidney stones. My daughter who is heathy suffers from kidney stones and they are very painful. Praying for you and your Mom.

my husband suffers from kidney stones, with severe pain and when they are moving can cause blood in urine as they cause inflammation and irritation even the very tiny ones. Good that you plan to see another Dr as the stones can cause blockage , and damage to kidney as well as sepsis if urine cannot flow properly. My husband had to have a temporary stent in ureter until stone passed. I would go to another Dr sooner rather than later if possible.
