Hi, my dad was diagnosed in the summer with PSP after 3 years of trying to get some answers. His health has recently deteriorated and has started wheezing. Not noticed breathing difficulties listed as a symptom anywhere, has anyone else experienced this. Got GP phone appointment for a few things for him tomorrow but just wondered if anyone else had any thoughts.
Thanks Julie

Is he complaining of any kind of discomfort? Not necessarily pain but stuffed or runny nose, or anything that maybe related to breathing? My mom sometimes does this too, especially when feeding her, she always sounds like she just had a run and is short on breathe, but when asked she never said she feels difficult to breath.
However, she always complains about stuffed nose, we now use a otc nose rinse at least 3 times a day, and rinse both nostrils twice each time. Afterwards she usually feels better, and using warm water is better than cold.
Her speech therapist gave us a checklist of symptoms to watch out for in case she starts to develop severe swallowing troubles at home, and one of them is runny nose especially when eating/drinking. I’m assuming the wheezing has something to do with that part of the body and the weaknesses of the muscles there.
I asked him if his chest was hurting and he said it wasn’t but he has been coughing up a bit of mucous. He does sound out of breath, but no runny nose. We’ve not got a speech therapist yet or any other medical support for that matter, still waiting for referrals etc. I was concerned that it would be linked to the problems with swallowing as he hasn’t had any issues with that yet. Thanks for taking the time to reply, much appreciated.
I wouldn't have said Mum "wheezed", but she did lose the ability to blow her nose, so got a bit blocked, we used Vick vapour rub to ease. Also found she would sometimes pant as if she was short on breath. We had this explained that as it became harder for the muscles to work she was only breathing in the top part of her lungs & every so often she would run low on oxygen and do a series of deep breaths (pants) to make up for it. She had her chest listened to on a regular basis and there was never any congestion to worry about.
I’m assuming he’s under the care of a Neurologist? If so my mom took pills to control mucus and even got Botox shots every 4 months. It worked perfectly.
He is but only had initial appointment where diagnosis was confirmed. He had his first appointment with the Parkinson’s nurse today which went really well. We feel a lot more supported now. Next appointment with neurologist is in November so I will mention your suggestion then 👍 thank you.
Dad has a lot of problems with mucus, and the wheezing and grunting is part and parcel of it. It also exhausts him as he can constantly try to clear it.
