A new hurdle! Anyone come across ones love one with PSP with a toothache. Sam can’t open his mouth anymore & has been on a feeding tube for over a year. I’m not sure how to address this issue. I do have a call into his palliative care nurse but responses don’t come quick enough. Maybe just antibiotics, I’m wondering. Hopefully I get someone who has dealt with this problem.
Thank you for a response

My darling had to have an aching wisdom tooth removed. He indicated his mouth hurt but I could no longer get him into our dentists surgery as the turning circle wouldn’t take his wheelchair. The dentist got us an appointment with a hospital especially catering for disabled patients. The wheelchair fitted onto a platform that could be raised and tilted. It wasn’t a good experience for either of us as my darling had to have his mouth forced open & clamped open. The dentist quickly found the problem, gave him an injection and extracted the wisdom tooth. C had no further problems tooth problems. Could you ring your dentist and see what is suggested. My husband couldn’t tolerate antibiotics but that may be an option for Sam and he didn’t have a feeding tube. My husband was so much happier once the tooth had gone. He must have been in agony.
Thanks for your reply. His dentist is out of country. Going to primary care doc tomorrow & of course his regular one is on vacation. It’ll be a process explaining his illness but I’m sure he needs antibiotics in meantime. His mouth seems locked closed. Just another hurdle. He can tolerate antibiotics. I’m wishing there is one day without a problem. Thank you
While your waiting to get in to a doctor how about trying one of the topical gels used on infants for teething? It may provide a bit of temporary relief and you should be able to apply with a finger tip or cotton swab.
My mom had PSP and her mouth would also involuntarily lock shut for varying amounts of time. My mom’s dentist referred her to a specialist whose office is set up for people with disabling conditions, and they also make emergency house calls (for an additional fee). I hope there are similar specialists where you live to make a visit to the dentist more accessible and timely.
I almost feel like starting a second post because this is tooth related but clenching is not the issue. I’m about to fork over US$800.00 for one crown. I’ve been advised that he needs two of them. Both upper teeth but on the opposite side of his mouth. I’ve opted to do one at a time to stretch the dollars over a period of more time to help with payments. In the back of my mind I wonder if it’ll be worth it. This sounds cruel but not knowing how much time he has left I wonder if it’s worth it 🤷♀️. Any thoughts out there?
