Yes, sorry to say. Aspirational pneumonia.

Yes, as NannaB wrote, ASPRATIONAL PNEUMONIA. My son had two bouts. The second put him in the hospital for approx 7-8 days, and he left with a PEG.

Welcome to this site Galarza;

Yes, as NannaB says.

You can find a lot of comment and advice concerning thickened liquids, soft food, feeding, choking, swallowing in the PSP historic post strings. Go up to the Search PSP Association window in the upper right of the screen and type one of those words. The search will bring up historic posts (from not just PSP but other HU associations too..)

Please feel free to introduce yourself, if you wish, and tell us more about your mom's history: when diagnosed, is she being cared for at home or in residential care (if in Res Care, the nursing staff should be aware of her difficulty swallowing - if she has it yet - and will give her an appropriate diet. If she hasn't got difficulty yet and you are "advance researching" (a good thing to do ;-) you may need to check with the care staff whether they know the disease and its difficulties. Both PSP and CBD are rare enough that not all care staff or even doctors, know about it.

Cheers and good luck!

In England Wiltshire farm foods do puréed foods, my wife was on them for a while but still got aspirational pneumonia and in hospital had an NG tube inserted, they wouldn't do a peg. I finished off the puréed meals. That was in 2016 and she is still going strong. Had a new tube fitted last Tuesday.

Quality of life? Big question! But no regrets.

Hi, Leon (Hubby) is due to have 2nd tube (P.E.G.) on 19th June, like you said Quality of Life ?? Massive question I have serious doubts, it is so so cruel

The problem is if I had let her die I would now be beating myself up and unable to forgive myself for the decision I made. We promised 'till death do us part' I don't believe it is for me to decide when that should be.

Totally agree, it was Leon's decision and I agreed with him naturally, but it is the illness that is so so cruel to watch them go through the horrid stages, thank goodness for this site, it has helped me so so much.

Yes, my mother has Psp and has had several infections due to aspiration, now she seems to have a constant wet cough or gurgle in her throat.

Yes unfortunately, it is called aspirational pneumonia. Most patients here will suffer from this form of pneumonia; and some may not get better. If your loved one starts choking on their food during every meal, it may be time to consider (actually this should be considered long before one needs it) the PEG or feeding tube where liquid nutrient goes directly into stomach bypassing the swallowing stage. If and when this happens, talk to dr and patient.

Good luck Do well,

AVB

Yes, but not only food. I've had two bouts of aspiration pneumonia and both were from my own mucus and saliva when I was sick. One reason that is important is a feeding rube is not a cure all. A feeding tube is fir nutrition but not to solve aspiration pneumonia

I thicken fluids and puree most of my foods. A strange thing is when I get head fluids I cough as the needed reflex. However I cough hard enough that I cut off my blood supply and faint. Its called syncopy. The fainting is very brief and I'm fine again, but this can happen every three minutes. My first bout of aspiration pneumonia was very severe with having to put on a ventilator and in intensive care for 28 days. My symptoms were hidden by the coughing

Bottom line is don't wait going to the ER

true that B6, don't wait to got o the ER for anything. My husband was choking from food and when he finally got AP , he had had a PEG tube for a year....However the question was about food so I was giving cq my expriences.....thanks for the write back~
