Death because of Aspiration
My experience is that aspiration often leads to pneumonia and pneumonia is a BACTERIAL infection. My 55 year old son, who died of PSP, suffered two bouts of pneumonia. One was treated with antibiotics at home and the second put him in the hospital for 7-8 days with IV antibiotics. Both times I took him to see my regular MD because of weird behavior, not because of physical symptoms.
The 2nd bout it had gone to Sepsis.
That is my experience.
I was able to correctly diagnose my dear Daddy's UTI the night before he was to see his primary care doctor for an annual physical, and the doctor said he did not have a UTI. The next day for the first time in his 81 years of living he was in an ambulance because of his raging UTI. I knew it because of his behavior as you said. And your son being so young (pause to hug you... xxx) age apparently has nothing to do with the fact that with PSP, any kind of infection causes a strange reaction that resembles dementia. Daddy even hallucinated a few times with the infections. It's so important that doctors and caregivers know this important weird possibility and even likelihood, with the beast known as psp.
Hi ARB1
It all depends on the strength of the person.
If there were no infection but someone who was very weak they might struggle slightly only for a very short while. If they were so weak then they might barely be aware.
If there were pneumonia too then they might barely be aware at all.
I would be happy to pass with aspiration under these circumstances.
If you have lost someone I offer my condolences.
Warmly
Kevin
I've read that pneumonia is one of the kindest deaths and hope that is the case for Ben when the time comes.

Dear ARB1;
Such a sad.question...Have you lost someone who has psp or cbd? Can you share more with us??
I'm not a doctor but because psp stole my dear daddy from this world, I researched a lot and know more about psp than many doctors and it's my guess that you're exactly right. Aspiration with psp can be completely silent and escape even the most trained and attentive eye. I hope you'll come back and let us try to help you. This is a wonderful forum of very kind souls who are all in one way or another, experienced in the same hell, including the grief, definitely including the grief. May God be with you and grant you peace.
Hi, I’m a community Matron and the answer to your question is. yes but they had usually aspirated before hand and an infectionn takes over but if they have had a lot to drink/eat beforehand or produce a lot of sputum/saliva it is possible I’m afraid. X
This question leads me to wonder,as I have been wondering for the last 8 months, what my husband really died from. The respiratory therapist at the nursing home had come to give him a breathing treatment around midnight. She set the mask on him and left the room while it worked. When she came back to the room approx 20min. later she found him deceased.
They listed his cause of death as cardiac arrest but I have wondered what really happened. It was hard to believe.
