That's exactly how it was for my husband. He was not in pain, but his breathing was coupled by longer and longer seconds of not breathing then , after several hours , it was more his non breathing was met by seconds of breathing....and then finally quietly and with out fear or pain just quiet prayers and support from me lying by his side... he let go.
