My husband has had PSP for about five years now. Lately he has been having problems with constipation. Can anyone tell me what works to get the bowels moving

My dad used to take a laxative every day - I don't remember the name but plz ask your doctor - constipation is very bad for patients because it can lead to hemorrhoids and general pain and delirium - a diet with fiber (apple or apple juice e.g.) in it also helped - some docs suggested having bananas caused constipation but I am not sure

someone said a glass of prune juice everyday and bingo.

Milled linseed is good. It can be sprinkled onto porridge or be hidden in soups & sauces. Banana will help, or any fruit and veg. Increase the amount of fiber but do it gradually so the gut has a chance to increase the bacteria needed to deal with the fiber. Things like physillium husk is good too as is wheat bran. Prune juice sounds like it ought to do the trick too.

I give my husband a dose of Dulphalac daily.

He actually only opens his bowels about twice a week now, sometimes just once a week and that concerns me but this does help him to 'go'.

The lack of excercise and the condition itself causes severe constipation.

Talk to your GP about this too.

If you can get it - Phloe Bowel Health. They are tablets or capsules made of kiwifruit extract and they work well. Or anything made from kiwifruit, juice or fruit themselves. Or good old Allbran if can be tolerated! Usual grspes or pureed prunes mixed with bran. That's what they offered in hospital. I find apples, bananas and eggs tend to be binding, so try only 1 lot of any of them in a day. Lots of fluid, at least 1.8l a day. Otherwise tske thecoffered coloxyl and/or lactulose and try not to let it happen again. Hope this helps.

Hi, know these feeling! My every waking moment is tied up with it! S is on the linseeds with porridge, Lactulose, twice a day. Etc., etc. I did have the District nurses involved finally, after four days in hospital, because of a blockage, they came in and gave enemas three times a week. That was really working, but then they dropped us, all of a sudden. That was 10 days ago. S spent the last couple days back in hospital! For some reason, it's seems to be a huge fight, it get my surgery to take this and PSP seriously! Hope you get better luck!!?

Lots of love

Lots of info in previous posts, but constipation is common in PSP sufferers for some reason, try to get more fluids into the diet and get your Dr involved early intervention best.

Best wishes Tim

My Mums bowels have been the main topic for us the last few months. In hospital they allowed her to get severe impacted which took alot of interventions to clear it as it had caused bleeding.

She had been home four weeks now and has always had a healthy diet so no changes needed there and as so underweight can't drink loads as lowers her salt levels if drinks over 1.5 litres. She drinks about a litre and loads of fruit.

We have tried all laxatives but she still has ended up bunged up again in time home so had to have GP out this week after having multiple phone appointments. They prescribed movicol and said to do two high dose days to move the blockage. Oh boy did it move it, yesterday was carnage! Out of all the laxatives we've tried lactulose, senna, sodium docusate, sodium picosulfate movicol has been the best and most painless for her. We will now need to find the right maintenance dose to keep her moving along as normal as possible.

Oh yes! Been there! Or at least the nurses have. I arrived after the cleanup - twice. They will insist on giving 2 ducolax daily omce he stops. I have explained there will be consequences! Have added 2 prunes and grapes today in the hope that the result will be less catestrophic! Last time was obviously exhausting for my man, as he slept most of the day. And he loves prunes!
