Eating out

My dad has PSP and he is struggling with swallowing, and is currently on a soft food diet. We really want to go out for my mum's birthday and we were just wondering of somewhere we can go with him. Does anyone have ideas of either a chain place or somewhere in Coventry and Warwickshire area.

Welcome to this site but sorry you had the need to join.

I don't know the area but I'm sure the restaurent would help you out if you spoke to them in advance. Our local garden centre liquidized a complete Christmas dinner for my husband when I mentioned he couldn't eat solid food, setting it all out like an artists pallet. We eat out quite a bit. C will have soup as long as it is smooth and I cut bread into very tiny pieces and soak it in the soup. I find jacket potatoes with cheese is good and always ask for an extra plate so I have room to mash it with extra mayo and butter. Last week out he had jacket with tuna and I mashed it with extra mayo and ketchup. He then had coffee cake, I removed the walnuts from the top, and soaked it in cappuccino. There are lots of smooth puds available usually and he loves ice cream. I always take his thickener for drinks.

I've found restaurents go out of their way to help. One waitress even ran over with extra serviettes during a coughing fit.

I hope you all enjoy the celebrations. Relax and have fun.

I read your post and think it is a good idea as well if you aren't sure what food is sold. I take a flask of soup and cut up bread with me if we go out without planning where to eat. If we find somewhere, C has the soup in the evening instead of at lunchtime.

Hi, i can only suggest ringing ahead. I am sure you will get a feel for how willing they may be to help just from chatting to them. i think it may well be down to individual staff rather than a chain. I would love to hear how you get on. Thanks and Good luck. Coyle51. X

When Margaret could eat we found that the big chains: Harvester, Toby's, Beefeater etc were very helpful and would liquidise a meal or even provide a soft version. Also it helped to ring ahead. As NannaB said garden centres were always helpful even now with PEG feeding they are happy to provide water and tables in a corner for a bit of privacy. Welcome to the site and you will find help and support, best wishes Tim

Go anywhere you want, just take his meal with you....restaraunt should not mind better to have 2 customers than none. put his meal in a covered sport cup or a thermos and assist him while you have a wonderful time out!

Tell Mum HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

Sincerely, AVB
