Catheter... when is it necessary?

Any advice here?? At this point he is able to get out of the chair with assistance outside the bathroom door and walk in but he has not been walking up at night and is in wet sheets int he morning.

At when point do people start using a catheter?

Brian has been in pads at night for at least two years now maybe longer. We did try the convene but it was not successful. They do try not to catherterise people unless it's really necessary because of the problems it causes. Sorry but i think your 1st choice would be to get some incontinent pads. Janexx

Oh yes, we do use those as well. I know they are high for infection but who wants to wake up in a wet bed day in and day out.

I got the washable pads and just wash sheets every morning.

Are you in england if so get referred to the urology dept and they will get him assessed for disposable pads. (Bit like a nappy). Every morning Brian is wet ok it's not nice but it is the safer option especially for psp people. Have you tried getting him up to use a bottle or go to the toilet. Janexx

Hi my husband uses a plastic bottle, yes we have accidents, I also put pads on th bed, and down the side. He has been fitted for a convene, but pulled it on, and we are still waiting for the community nurse to bring us some more, waited ages, many phone calls, but still waiting. Also tried pads but they were not good for George, came right through and Bed was wet through. Sorry could not be more help. Love Yvonne xxxxxx

I am not in England... US... i do use bed pads, washable ones. We try and wake him to use the urinal but most the time he refuses.

My husband wears a convene, like a condom but fits to a tube and bag which holds the urine. There have been a few accidents but it has made life so much easier. Some men can't use them but it is worth a try. Disposable pads keep the wearer dry. Lille classic form are shaped very wide front and back and there are 4 levels of absorbency. They are worn using close fitting mesh pants which can be washed but are so inexpensive, they can be treated as disposable. Before he acquired the convene I tried many different types of pads and these were definitely the best for him, keeping him dry all night. The more packs you buy, the cheaper they are. I'm sure they would be available world wide.

I am in Canada and am using depends pull-up disposables. They are deductible for medical expenses and the Real Fit Depends seem to be fine. Jim sleeps most of the day and through the night. I try and get him to use to bottle without a lot of success. They also make bowel accidents easier to clean up as well. I hate it but with him sleeping from 10:00 sometimes through to 5:00 and then back to bed at 6:30 this seems to be the answer. I change him when I go to bed and most times the bed is fine. I have hospital pads and also disposable pads that I put under him as well as a good mattress pad and more protection under that. It is a real saving of the mattress. Lots of laundry daily.

I have found using the pads really good , I also place puppy trainer sheet under his bottom . they are inexpensive and help keep the bed dry
