Handy car grab rail.

Hi all, just wondered if my car grab rail idea could be of use to any of you having problems getting your patient into the car. These suction handles are a easy to fix and strong. We have had this one in our Picasso for 2 years now and it is a great help. Peter.

Where do you get it? In a mobility shop or car place? We've given up using our car (too much effort for my dad, but also because he can't grab hold of anything) - rent special transport (wheelchair goes in the back) with a driver whenever he has to go somewhere, but it really makes you think twice of going somewhere which is not good. Maybe he'll try again with this. Thank you, Peter.

Has he tried placing a plastic bag on the seat helps a lot with moving turning etc

He's got one of those round pillows that turn - but it's more being able to get up from sitting - I pull him up as much as I can. We'll have to try it again.

hi Lieve

we had a Belt supplies by the OT. It worked a treat, also kind to my back. The belt has loops which you can grab and pull him up. Maybe worth a try.

EBay or Amazon, they usually come in pairs. PETER

Thanks Maddy and Peter - I'll investigate. I don't want him to be resigned that we can't go on our impromptu trips anymore (you know, in between showers :-) )

When we bought our car 4 yr ago got a fabric "sky hook" placed in the curve of the door frame by local disability centre, just right position for passenger to grab and swing into car, not as far forward as windscreen or as far back as car's grab handle which my wife can only reach to help get out of car. May be worth checking at your local disability mobility centre, nothing to do with Motorbility, usually attached to local hospital.

Hi, I bought S a "Handy Bar" for the car. It looks like a ice axe, fits into to the metal catch, when the door is open, so the user can push themselves up. Also, it has a place, so if the need comes, it can cut the seat belt and one end could break glass, in case of an accident. It fits most cars, except the one we have now! But our new car has a handle on the passenger side, in the middle, which is brilliant. I know S is safe getting into the car, once he has hold of this!!! Got the Handy Bar from a disabled specialist shop.

Lots of love
