How much of the parkinsonism (PSP) affects the suffering patient when it comes to UTI. I had a urologist to say to me when I took my husband UTIs are common with PSP patients. Is the Sentiment/ drugs they take part of the problem. His bacteria was a 4+. My sister is a lab tec and said that is the worst you can have.

The only drug my husband is on for PSP is Glycopyrronium Bromide drops under his tongue to help dry saliva but he has frequent UTIs. Unfortunately, the antibiotics given to him last year, started off his ulcerative colitis. I knew penicillin would do it so he was given something else and we discovered it is all antibiotics. For someone who has to be hoisted onto the commode, it is horrendous as I never get him sorted in time so every day is a continuous change of clothing. He still has a UTI but the GP said as long as he is not in pain and doesn't have a fever, avoid antibiotics.

It does seem as if uti's are common don't think it can be linked with medication it is more likely the inability to completely empty bladder. I know that diet can influence the amount of and severaty of infections. Janexx

My mum is prone to UTIs, had three infections and six courses of antibiotics to shift them in last two months. Poor hygiene technique (she has lost use of her right arm so struggles to wipe her self efficiently) and the continued deterioration are the main culprits. Mums bladder no longer fully empties and the remaining urine can harbour bacteria. I'm going to have to self catheterise mum soon and I've been told this should help with the infections as the bladder will be emptied more thoroughly. They've also mentioned long term antibiotic use as mum gets very confused and unstable when has infections but we will see with that one. Mum on loads of tablets already for variety of other conditions as well as PSP. Also try to give her cranberry juice to drink in the hope it helps too!!

We are also using the cranberry juice, hoping. Just finished a round of antibiotics, doc says he's healed but I'm not as sure, we'll see!

My husband was let out of rehab with an undetected UTI. He was home appprox 21 hours and then straight to hospital. They were writing him off there, said his was very severe, don't know the numbers. Dark urine also means going into renal failure. Watch him very carefully and push fluids as much as possible. 14 days of antibiotics to clear it up. Also having issues with eating. All they are giving him is puree food and thickened fluids which makes him very unhappy

Hello, haven't taken part here for probably close to a year, check in every now and again. Anyway, my husband has been in care for a little over a year, and has just has his first bout of UTI, lasted about 7 weeks. Once they finally got it cleared up, few days later, he couldn't pee, they assume that is neurological, related to the PSP. Now he has a catheter in, they'll leave it for a couple of months and then see if the bladder will empty on its own, if not, it'll be put back in for life. But, up until now, he has not had any UTI's, but yes, it is likely due to the disease, and the inability to completely empty the bladder.

My other half had a UTI and it did a terrible job on him. Ended up in the hospital. They were talking hospice but a14 day treatment with antibiotics took care of it.

Look into d-mannose for treating Uti.
