Mum fell.

I have been struggling to understand or explain to my mum why she keeps falling backwards. She has been asking me why do i always fall backwards. I thought her balance was out of whack because her bunnions made her toes point east and west. She fell again last week. Broke her femur in a few places. Her partner and my brother in their wisdom? dragged her into bed from the bathroom before calling an ambulance. !!!!!!!!

On arrival at hospital i over hear paramedic. Say Diagnosis PSP.

My brother never shared this information with me or our older brother. It was a complete shock. She was apparently diagnosed two years ago. Two years i can't get back with mum. Not understsnding why she was losing so much weight and slow in responding to us. I feel so sad and cheated i could not truthfully answer my mum.

Struggling.

Jill you are such an inspiration!! No problem, we can understand your typing. I always find so much wisdom in your posts. Our loved one was a journalist/writer (not the greatest typist) but stopped writing 2 years ago. Keep on typing Jill, we need you. Take care, it sounds like you are still up, if you are falling, so kudos to you!! V

Hi S

I am also sorry to hear your mum has PSP. I was diagnosed just over a year ago having been through the Parkinsons/MSA route. I used to fall quite a bit but nowadays I manage quite well thanks to my long suffering wife.

IT is not clear from your post, does your mum know that she has PSP? I personally think she has a right to know that, if she does not, but in any case you can then tell her why she always falls backward, also hopefully you are protecting her with a helmet at least if not body pads to help prevent broken bones. I am very sorry she has PSP and that you did not know.

Sorry about your mom. Sometimes even family make wrong decisions. You still have time to love your mom. Falls are a major cause of injury and death in PSP. Bottom line is stay out of hospital. Dementia patients do not recover well after going under anathesia, generally. Lots of great information on PSPA and CurePSP.org so read so you are informed. Falls and aspiration pneumonia are usually the causes of death in PSP many times. Stay strong for your mom.
