Hi all.my dad's had his peg fitted,all is well.just having a problem,mostly in a morning he has mucos in his throat,

Sometimes I manage to pull it out.he has a build of mucus on his tongue,which I brush gently 3 times a day with a soft baby toothbrush.any ideas on helping with the mucos.

We had a massive problem with our dad and mucus, we used pure black grape juice which everyone on this site recommended to us and it worked brilliantly ,small glass 2-3 times a day he loved it and it was so refreshing for him ,hope this is of some help xx

I used to wipe mom's mouth out daily with a damp soft cloth, loads of stuff would come out. Then she would have a bit of pineapple juice or on good days a bit of fresh pineapple to freshen the mouth. An enzyme in it helps dissolve mucus. Not a pleasant task, is it, but they feel much better afterwards. Good luck, jane x

Thankyou.my dad can't eat or drink anything anymore,he can't swallow and he chokes,I've been and bought a tongue scaper it has very soft bristles,and yes he loves me clearing his mouth.x

Hi Robin,we are 2 and one half into a PE ,mucos is a big problem but can be controlled,we are well past the any liquid stage so we began with scopolamine 1.5mg patches that go behind the ear ,an over the counter drug ,they eventually burnt an area behind each ear enough that we had to get off these ,there is a hangover type of effect for 2 or more days getting off this drug,.meclizine,25 mg capsules,by prescription got us through for another period which we still use( above the recommended dose,)and have had to add a portable suction unit, the latter being the saviour.You have to get used to this machine ,it can be rented from your pharmacy for 35 to 40 dollars monthly you need the long straw type suction tube and learn to be able to suction deep,a paramedic ( ambulance) was the one who trained me,they are the first responders who have the most knowledge on these units...again it will assist you greatly.,at this point remember to check inside the mouth with a flashlight for a buildup of dry mucos...it really cakes in there as the illness progresses beyond the patient ,s ability to eat or take any fluids ,you will need an object like a plastic toothpick and a narrow long tweezer to pick the dry stuff so it does not fall in his throat,if it gets like my wife is now, jaw locked lots of the time, hopefully he has a missing tooth that you can put the suction hose into...I just remembered.,along with meclizineget a prescription for atropine drops,so,meclizine,atropine and a suction machine,check the mouth every 2 or 3 days,and both your lives will get a lot easier,otherwise choking will nessitate many hospital visits,let me know,RD

My husband has atropine drops, suction machine, scopolamine patch & continues to be unable to get up all the mucus. Is this the beginning of the end, and what happens eventually?

Hi Robin - my dad used scolpolmine patches - they really helped - also I know this is tough to do if you don't have help overnight but your dad should be elevated and rotated every 2 hours. this will help move "stuff" around - also a suctioner would be helpful too - - -

Can you have suction machines at home,in England.could really have used one this morning,don't want him in hospital again,he's so much better looked after at home.
