Hi davyh

Just noticed no replies to your query. There are certain gastrointestinal "pacemaker" cells (Interstitial cells of Cajal) that are involved in the motility of the stomach and intestines. Some Parkinson's sufferers have been shown to have PseudoObstruction of their gastrointestinal system (since there is nerve damage associated with the function of these cells).

I am aware that some PSP sufferers have gastro problems and it is possible that this condition should be considered. I am currently experimenting with my wife's gastric reflux that may be possibly a result of PSP affecting nerves that are responsible for the oesophageal muscles (sphincter - that keeps the food in the stomach and prevents reflux). She takes proton pump inhibitors for the reflux but with little effect, so it may well be a "mechanical muscle" problem (due to PSP) rather than acid problems etc in the stomach.

Anyway, I think a medication called octreotide has worked well with pseudo obstructive gastrointestinal problems, but you'll have to check this out with a gastroenterologist (who needs to brush up on PSP and its affects on the gastro system).

Sorry I cannot help much with this problem, but I'm out of my depth here.

All the best

T.

my dad who has PSP does have problem going to the loo and is quite constipated. this is linked to the fact he is barely mobile and this affects transit. His doctor has prescribed a powder he takes twice a day for that and my mum is watching intake of vegetables to make sure bowel movement are regular....

sorry for the graphic details.

My mother in law uses lactulose every day, 15mls in the morning and we eat a lot of veg and fruit on her museli in the mornings, she is now regular and it makes it easier as it can cause her bed hemeroids from straining.
