One memory that still makes me laugh .....

Just reading a post which has made everyone laugh made me think of an incident years ago with my Mom, Irene.

She was in a wheelchair but could walk slowly with assistance. I took her to the local supermarket, put her in her wheelchair, got one of those trolleys that attach to the wheelchair, it was like a military manoeuvre ! We had put about 5 items in the trolley when she whispered 'I want a wee'. Well, I got to the cash desk as quickly as I could, paid for the 5 items (we had a massive shopping list still to get), wheeled her to the car in a disabled spot right outside the supermarket cafe, unfastened the trolley from her wheelchair and started to put the items in the boot so I could wheel her back to the toilets, and looked up just in time to see a flash of her yellow coat as she was running - yes, running - out of her wheelchair and to the toilets in the supermarket ! God knows what the folk in the cafe must have thought if they were looking out of the windows. I must have looked like a fraud with an empty wheelchair and my car in a disabled parking spot, and Mom running to the loos. We always referred to it as her 'Lou and Andy' moment from the TV programme 'Little Britain'.

Weird how sometimes she could do things occasionally we least expected.

Odd disease indeed.

This reminded me of an incident with my dear mum too. When she was yet undiagnosed and living in sheltered accommodation she had carers coming in 3 times a day and a warden that was on hand until I got home at 4pm where I would take over and I was on call at all times. One morning I got a call to say mum could not get out of her chair. The warden and carer were really worried and I thought well this is the end of mum's independence if she can't get out of her chair. I rushed round there and mum was sat in her rise and recline chair. I pushed the button to make the chair rise and see if I could help mum up but no sooner had it risen than mum grabbed her walker and legged it into the bathroom! We just stood there with our jaws dropped open and we must have looked a sight. But really had no one thought to remind mum or to press the button for her in the chair? So funny when we thought about it afterwards!

I was more worried they would think they'd witnessed a real fraud in a wheelchair ! Mind you, my chin was on the floor in wonderment - I must have looked a sight !

I had to go to the toilets with her wheelchair to fetch her ......

She would often surprise us like this - she didn't speak for ages and then suddenly started to talk, and couldn't stop ! She said she needed to tell me loads of things before her voice went again, which sadly it did a day or two later. Everyone was so surprised and it seems to be a strange aspect to PSP.
