Hi Guys,
My younger brother (age 61), has urinary problems. His urologist wants him to have a
procedure called Urolift. Does anyone have any information to share concerning
this procedure?
Thanks,

Before committing to a surgical procedure, I might at least explore some men's pelvic floor physical therapy approaches first. Here's just one potential provider link in the Tucson area. There are others to be found if your younger brother may live elsewhere.

Hi Rick,
A urolift is a procedure to help with symptoms of BPH, aka obstructive voiding symptoms. It helps preserve antegrade (normal) ejaculation better than the traditional TURP, however it may not be as effective for his voiding symptoms. This all depends on prostate size and shape. Pelvic floor PT would not be helpful in this case, unfortunately, assuming he has a prostate still.
I had the procedure last year with uncertain improvement in night time urinary frequency. Before, I was waking every hour to 2 hours. Now I range from 2 hours to 3 hours. Sometimes I inexplicably sleep over 4 hours.
In summary, I feel the procedure was worth it and would recommend to anyone with bph since no tissue damage. I concluded that my urination frequency is mostly the result of the amount and types of fluids I drink before bedtime. Ironically, contrary to doctors advice, I seem to urinate less when drink alcohol before bed!
P.s. my urolift was performed in the dr office with minimal sedation. It was very painful and thus I strongly advice anyone planning to urolift to insist on a general anesthesia at a surgery center.
