I’ve been looking for a site like this and happy to come across it. 55 year old here. Getting ready for RP on Monday August 6 after diagnosed with Stage 3, PSA 14, Gleason 4+5. CT Scan, bone scan showing no spread. I just want to have the surgery - pray margins and lymph are clear - and can begin the healing process.
Enjoying reading the previous posts and learning so much already to help understand what to expect.
With prostate cancer, the first inclination is always "just get it out!" But more calm reflection shows us that, at least for high risk men, it seldom does. Please read this before you make an irrevocable decision.

I had SBRT monotherapy for low risk. It is experimental for high risk, but early results look good.
Welcome. I live in New York so I also have access to the once a month they prostate cancer support group. This blog is useful. Face-to-face could be more intimate if you have access.

I just wanted to wish you luck for whatever treatment you decide. It is a tough time as I was there almost 1/2 year ago as you are now. You will get through this phase and your mood will increase after treatment starts. It happened with me.
If you go with RP route my advise is to do the kegel exercises till surgery and after catheter removal. Do the kegels while walking. This helped me a lot with gaining continence after surgery.

I wish you the best on Monday. I trust that you've reviewed all your options and hope you did talk with a radiation oncologist. The decision is difficult, especially with multiple choices.
I was in a similar place after my December 2017 diagnosis. My Gleason scores for three positive samples also included a 4+5, as well as a perfect 10. After discussions with my urologist, a surgeon, and a radiation oncologist, I opted for 44 days of radiation treatment. For a high Gleason score, like mine, radiation seemed to be their consensus. I completed the radiation treatments two months ago, but will be on hormone therapy for the next year-plus. So far, peeing quite nicely without a problem. I wish the same for you!
