Radiation Treatments at MSKCC (NYC)

Hi there,

I am 56 years old and after fours years on AS after a Gleason 6 diagnosis at MSKCC, I was recently diagnosed with Gleason 7 (3+4) after a targeted biopsy of the right transition zone.

I know I have many options, and I am favoring RT over RP given the increasingly favorable results based on the studies. I have an appointment scheduled with Dr. Michael Zelefsky in August.

I was hoping some folks could offer some thoughts regarding MSKCC's "specialties" in this area.

For example, if I went with SBRT for treatment, is MSKCC's "MSK Precise" a good option or should I consider SBRT at a different facility?

Same questions for HD and LD brachytherapy? Is MSKCC better for one of these options or is it considered excellent for both?

Thanks in advance for any replies.

MSKCC is as good as it gets, and Zelefsky is the Master. He started out with LDR brachytherapy, and later offered SBRT and HDR brachy. It's as one-stop shopping as it gets.

May I ask how do you rank MSKCC nationally as far as SBRT and Brachy? I'm in the east cost and wouldn't mind travelling to get to the best center specializing in the above. Thanks.

Zelefsky is tops.

My appointments at MSKCC are August as well, Laudone and Zelefsky. Happy to compare notes....

I had an RP with Laudone in 2014 and he is tops in my book. Spent hours on nerve saving and the results have been as good as it gets. I had Salvage Radiation and, later, focal radiation from Sean McBride and he is great as well.

Hi, my dx was 8/18 and started treatment at MSK shortly after. Here is a link to my 1st post (med terminology may be a bit off, however, I've learned so much since being a member of this forum!)

It is a chronology of my experience through radiation.

I couldn't be happier with the outcome to date!

Also, I've made it to 72... Hmm....😃

Feel free to PM me.

Best,

AJ

If MSK/Zelefsky doesn't work out, Alan J Katz is another option in your neck of the woods. Katz was one of the early pioneers regarding SBRT for prostate cancer and has published extensively on this topic.

Thanks H4H, “MSK Precise” stereotactic hypo fractionated radiology. Just had my teleconference w Dr Sean McBride at MSK at noon today. They are setting me up for Fiducials and Mapping next 3 weeks w Radiology for first of year (to avoid Christmas craziness). 5 doses. Same as you. Appreciate your detailed experience. Nothing they can do for burning urination?

Please keep us posted. Mine will not be for cure, but for extension of Life and QOL.

Best to you and yours,

Mike
