Not sleeping

Just finished last radiation treatment on Friday, March 27

During the day I am fine but once the sun goes down things change

Frequently feel the need to pee but no results other than a burning sensation.

Urgency with leakage, but again no results.

On no medications

Running water in creases the urge but no results

Warm showers help sometimes

Only true relief is soaking in tub of hot water

Suggestions??!!

Urinary retention can be a serious side effect. If you can't pee, go to the ER for catheterization. Try restricting fluids at night.

You've just finished rad treatments, so the initial side effects are happening.

In my case, it took a few weeks for them to resolve, but things got back to normal fairly quickly. I had treatment to the gland and lymph node region - the max to the gland.

Burning and an urgency to go were the main culprits.

Urinary retention is another matter. IF this is an issue, I can tell you that this WOULD become an emergency issue. Toxicity could become fatal if untreated.

I ended up in emergency before my Dx and a catheter was the solution, until they did a TURP.

Don't mess with urinary retention. Reduced 'pee flow' is one thing that can be temporary, a urinary blockage is quite another.

Thank you for the words of encouragement

When I use “urinary retention” painful difficulty but always resolved. Found soaking in tub before bed does two things. Helps relax my body n helps drain bladder

Again, Thanks n be safe

After two years post treatment, I have no long term side effects.

I suspect that is the most common outcome based on what I've seen and read.

Ask your doc to prescribe Flomax. It will help you pee

“..... During the day I am fine but once the sun goes down things change....”???

So you urinate during the day, when more active? Just at night you have the conditions listed?

Have found with time conditions have improved

Sleep better with 1mg melatonin

Hot soak before bed does double duty, relax for sleep n empties bladder

Keep urinal next to bed so do not have to travel

Sleep about two hours n up for one before returning to sleep

This also is improving

Keeping hydrated is the key for me

Thanks

One suggestion that's worked for me, though it isn't pretty. Buy yourself a sitz bath from any pharmacy, and fill it with very warm water. Position the bath on the toilet rim, and sit on the "bath" with your penis in the water. You'll find this comforting and it very often stimulates urination. You'll obviously have to wash off after this, but I've found it a soothing way to deal with difficult urination during and after radiation. It's also great for any anal/rectal pain you might have.
