Difficulty sitting after Prostate Surgery !

Terry33 profile image
24 Replies

Hello everybody this is my first post. I just had radical prostatectomy 11 days ago. A lot of the pain has subsided more or less, but I feel if I sit for an extended period of time, the area is too tender and gets inflamed and painful. Bumby car rides are really challenging. I am using donut cushions plus pillows and often just choosing not to sit. Is this normal? How long does it last? Any tips or strategies. Thank you.

That is to be expected

You had major surgery and everything from the waist down and sometimes above have been effected

My surgery was from the top through the bladder so I didn’t have that much discomfort but it will take time

I don't know how normal it is, but I had the same experience, I felt like I was sitting on a rock for quite a while. I'm almost 9 weeks post surgery and am still a little uncomfortable, especially sitting for any length of time on a hard chair. I put away my doughnut cushion about a week ago. Hope this helps...

It took me about 6 months before it finally started to settle down.

it's pretty common, unfortunately; sitting down was pretty awful for a while, so long ago now (eight years?) I don't remember how long it lasted, but maybe a couple months; I know I didn't jump back on my bike pretty quickly like I did after my earlier kidney cancer surgery, even though that one cut through a good part of my abdomen. Be patient--every heals differently, but the body has amazing powers of recovery, and you should start noticing a gradual improvement pretty soon.

Thanks so much.

I had the same experience as well. In my case, alot of the sitting related pain went away once the catheter was removed.

I'm getting my catheter removed in a couple of hours - I hope I have the same experience as you. Thanks.

Hi Terry,

I had my surgery in January. The 2 months, there was extreme discomfort when sitting for extended periods of time. I used to drink a lot of water and that had me get up to urinate giving me a break from continious sitting. It really helps sitting on a gel cushion.

The first 6-8 weeks it felt like the area around my perimium as if it had hardened. Things ease with time and at the end of two months the sensation eases and things start returning to normal.

Hope this helps.

- V

Thanks bro! Helpful indeed.

Initially, the whole groin and everything in the area may seem a little weird- sometimes numb and at other times more sensitive than usual. Things all settle in a couple of months.

Good luck - wishing you a speedy recovery!

Ditto here. Surgery 7-1/2 months ago, catheter out 7 months ago. Still some twinges in the "taint" (perineum) and occasionally when I pee. Healing is in two phases: the first 6-8 weeks to maybe 90% and the rest of the year as the scars are revised and reconstructed by the inflammatory process. You are having a typical post-op course.

What kind of surgery did you have? The DaVinci RALP? Or traditional RP? I had the RALP and had no discomfort sitting at all. I am surprised at all the fellows who have experienced it.

I had traditional RP. Great you had it smooth regarding sitting.

Terry, from you picture it looks like you're underfed. I had the traditional RPD and two hernia repairs and I did NOT have issues/pain/discomfort when sitting. Where did you have it done? Was the doctor a veteran of RPDs? What's his name and your age?

ALL INFO IS VOLUNTARY but it helps us help you and helps us too.

LOL - Funny! I'm 50 and the surgeon is probably top 3 in Canada. I'm starting to wonder if constipation/irritation has played a role in my bum pain?

I had surgery 5 weeks ago, and my perineum hurts big time when sitting in my office chair at work for too long. At home or anywhere else when sitting in a comfortable chair, I am fine. I started using a sit and stand desktop accessory a few days ago, and now I work standing up when sitting becomes too painful. Good luck !

My husband finally found a comfortable small rubber inner tube to sit on. He tested at least 20 types of pads and this kind of heavy duty orange rubber inflatable is the best.

I had discomfort, but when I used a doughnut cushion in the car, it disturbed the pelvic floor muscles enough that I released a veritable flood of pee. I was throwing away Depends that were absolutely soaked. I quit that and switched to a small pillow for a while until I healed.
