SUPPLEMENTS?

What's the wisdom on supplements? Naturopath associated with urologist recommends CQ10, ADT Support packet, Immunopectin, GD Toxol, (These may be his own brands) plus 400 units Vitamin D3 to ward off return of PCa. Prostate removed January 2016. PSA < .02. Thanks.

In my opinion they make little difference in whether the cancer returns after surgery. You have an undetectable PSA so unless there were unfavorable characteristics (Gleason 8 or higher, positive margins, PSA greater than 10) you're pretty ok.

I'd spend the money on a continence/pelvic floor physiotherapist if you're still leaking and haven't tried one.

Thanks, David. I'm currently working with a pelvic floor therapist. No change yet, but it's a process. q

I Have PCa and not had treatment yet , I am on Active surveillance, but I take supplements, such as ip-6 & inositol, and drink Pomegranate juice. I have mixed reactions from different sources, including my Urologist. Some say waste of money, some same if you thinks it help go for it. No scientific evidence they help, but, I continue to take them. So, any body's opinions are just as good as the others.

Two questions you might ask, for each of those suggestions:

a) What's the clinical data that supports your recommendation? Are there some controlled, double-blind studies I can look at?

b) If I buy the supplement from you (since it's a custom formulation), what's your profit margin?

(b) is important, and rarely asked. But when the person recommending a product has a financial stake in selling it to you, it's good to know what his incentives are.

There's an aphorism:

"Alternative medicine" is treatments we don't know whether they work, or not. If we know they work, they become "medicine".

. Charles

PS -- I know that others will disagree, and I don't always follow my own advice.

Check medline for studies. vitamin d some take very large doses but I do think some studies support vitamin d. the naturopath brand. find out what is in it first and foremost . people say alternative medicine. I say complementary medicine.
