chronic constipation and weaning

hi everyone,

my lo is almost 10 months and weaning has been very rocky from the start. He suffers with chronic constipation for which he is on laxatives daily.

I’m wondering if the constipation has a lot to do with reluctance to eat a good variety of foods? If he could live on yoghurt he would. I put lots good foods into plain yoghurt as a way to get more down him and some days he will eat anything but more often it’s a battle.

I asked the doctor what foods could help with the constipation and all he could come up with was cheerios!!

Has anyone had a lo who suffers with constipation and what helped? Did it affect their eating? How long did the constipation go on for? Any tips for fussy eaters?

it’s a long one so thanks in advance 😊

If you can sneak things into his yogurt I've always gone with the 3 Ps for constipation

Prunes, Pears and Peaches

They're full of fibre and always helped my girls to go. We used to get the Ella's kitchen prune pouches which they'd wolf down, but you could also sneak them into yogurts too.

Hope it gets better soon x

I second the Ella’s prune pouches-really easy to hide in food or just give on a spoon (or in yoghurt) as it’s sweet and inoffensive. Does your LO drink plenty of water with meals in addition to milk? I found not drinking enough could really affect my son’s poos (as it does to me!). Will your boy eat reddy brek? Oats can be good for constipation and it’s also easy to mix smooth fruit purees into if he’s fussy with textures, plus it’s fortified with iron so a bit of a weaning winner. Xx

He only ever wants to drink out of a proper glass and shows no interest in his sippy cup. He has plenty of wet nappies so I think he’s getting most of what he needs from milk.

Yes thanks, we do the prunes and other fruit purées. He will also have porridge on a good day.

I’m hoping he’s just having a long phase and will eventually become more adventurous! Thanks x

Poor you. I was also going to suggest fruit purées and especially prunes. You can put it through yoghurt. Do also try with all the veg purées it can take up to 10 times for them to like something. 🤞 his constipation sorts itself out.
