20th Week anomaly scan- View restricted by fetal position

Hi everyone,

I has my 20th week anomaly scan yesterday but the ultrasound view was restricted by fetal position and artefact from bowel gas. They had me go for a fast paced walk for 10 mins but that didnt help either.

I have been asked to come back next week for repeat scan. My worry is if the baby is not in an optimal position for the next scan, Will I get a chance for another scan appointment ?

And what should be the position of baby in order to have a clear 20th week scan?

Also, Any tips on getting the baby to move during scan so that the view is clear for Sonographer to do all the tests?

Thanks

Hi there, this happened to me too. It's annoying not getting the complete reassurance at the 1 scan but I was fortunate enough the sonographer was just more patient at the second attempt appointment as baby was still in a difficult position (same sonographer) so I think they realise they just need to get a little more inventive. I ended up in all sorts of shapes on the table to get the correct views. It depends on what they're trying to see as to how they need baby to be lying so honestly just sheer luck and chance. There's no science to it.

Enjoy seeing your baby again 😍 x

With both of mine I had to go back a 2nd time. With one of mine they were just in a better position but the other one I had to do all sorts of things and they managed to get what they needed. I had to star jumps, go and pee, there was inverted scanning bed thing. Some of the images could only be got when I lay on my side all sorts of things till they got it. I do think they were more patient because in my area its 2 scans only if they dont get it they dont try a 3rd time.

I know my baby would kick and move whenever I ate, so I wonder if that could be a useful strategy for you to try. If baby is asleep in a less than ideal position I am not sure how you can wake them up, maybe loud noises? Eventually you could always go for a later private scan - if they didn't offer you a 3rd appointment.
