My eldest son has just turned 4 and his school have said ideally he needs to be potty trained but me and mum feel he's no were near ready as every time we put big boys pants on him 9/10 times he refuses to use the toilet or potty and crys for a nappy, and when he goes in his nappy he doesn't even tell you until you notice it yourself, it's worth also saying he does have a global development delay

I think he might be resisting change but also agree he might not be completely ready. He may need a different approach so worth getting advice from a health visitor or ask for referral to a specialist. It might also help to make the changes something to be excited about, rather than a change he resists. It’s a tough transition for some children and for most parents so it’s helpful to be patient, but clear on what steps you will take and break it down into small milestones. Using reusable nappies might encourage him to tell you when his nappy needs changing and it could be a gentle first step.
