Hi everyone,

I am wondering how old was your child when you put in the Nursery. What is your experience.

I am going back to work and now my baby is 11 months he is with me all the time and we don't see much people as he was born during lock down. And now when we get visitors he Cries until I go away with him to the bedroom and breastfeed him till he sleep. Iam now worried about putting him in the nursery.

Please tell about your experience for putting your baby in the Nursery for the first time.

My LB has been in nursery for the last 4 weeks, since he turned 1. He too was a lockdown baby and I've just gone back to work full time after having the year off at home with him.

He's settled in nursery quite well, he only does 2 days a week as he's with family the rest of the time. Every baby is different, mine is quite confident around people and doesn't usually have too many 'clingy' instances but since starting nursery he has been a bit more so than normal.

Today was our first drop off without tears though and he was super happy when he saw me at the door at pick up time - every time up until today there have been tears at drop off and a frantic dash to get to me at the end of the day including more tears!

In hindsight, I wish I'd staggered my return to work so that it wasn't such a jump from no work to full time work, to get us both used to the change a bit more gently. Having said that, they all settle eventually - at least that's what I'm told, so I wouldn't worry too much and try to focus on the positives that it will have on your little one's development and social skills.

Good luck x

I’ve worked in nurseries and I’m now a childminder so I can tell you from the other side. 9months old can be a tricky age to settle anyway because our babies become more aware of what’s going on around them, but obviously the pandemic has made things a little trickier for some. It may take him longer than usual to settle but please be reassured that the nursery staff will do everything they can to help make that easier for you both.

It’s also quite amazing how quickly babies can adapt to new routines, especially surrounding nursery. You will probably find they have no issues getting him to sleep as he will associate feeding to sleep with you and continue that at home.

Don’t ever feel bad about calling to check up on him, no good nursery will mind you doing that xx
