Toilet training resources

Hi there, we recently toilet trained my son (he was 3 at the time but has just turned 4) but he is still struggling with doing a poo on the toilet. He has managed to do this twice but has had many accidents.

When it’s obvious he needs to go you can almost see a look of panic come over him and he’ll disappear and hide before going in his pants. We’ve used books to explain what happens but I think he’s very confused. On cleaning him up we inevitably put his poo in the toilet and he then thinks he’s achieved Doing a poo in the toilet 😫.

I’ve tried explaining in different ways with as few words as possible but he just doesn’t seem to ‘get it’ or he’s afraid.

We’ve tried getting him to sit on the toilet at regular intervals when we think it’s likely he’ll need to go but it’s very hard to get him to sit for any length of time before wanting to get down. We also have a reward bag which worked wonders for doing wees.

If you managed to keep reading and have any ideas of books or resources I’d be very grateful xx

Bless him. My LG toilet trained a few months ago very quickly but hated doing a poo. In the end I literally had to hold her down on the potty (she’s suffers from constipation so didn’t want to get stuck in a rut) and made such a big deal when she went with lots of praise and clapping etc. We sometimes took books in and read to her as she would get bored on the potty and want to get up when she quite clearly needed to go.

We actually found a wipeable reward chart and gave her extra ticks (which equals money) for going on the potty and she did start going by herself.

She’s just started using a toilet now for wees but will not do a poo on the toilet only on the potty. Do you think he may prefer a potty for a poo? I have heard poos take longer to achieve so I’m sure he’ll get there in the end xx
