Positive test : Do I need to go in person to the GP?

I tested positive using an HPT last Wednesday, but due to the coronavirus situation, I have struggled to get a phone consultation when phoning my surgery. I will try again tomorrow at 8am - fingers crossed I can speak to a doctor. Will I need to go in person to get my pregnancy confirmed, or will my GP refer me to my local midwife?

Hi, assuming you're in England you don't need to speak to your GP, they'll just tell you to contact the midwife service directly. Go to your local NHS website, so for example in Bristol it's North Bristol NHS Trust, and there should be a link to a form in the maternity services section x

Just refer yourself straight to the midwives, your GP doesn’t need to check, congrats mama!! xx

Have you asked reception if you need to.speak to.gp? I have never spoken to a GP (unless youre having problems) in three pregnancies... In my area I was given a number to call /email to book with midwife and waited for booking appointment. Nobody will confirm pregnancy and they will take your word for it as pregnancy tests are very good now a days. All the info of what you should be doing in in the NHS website ante natal session.

Thanks everyone!

The NHS website says "speak to your GP or midwife" so that's why I thought I would ask here - I found you through the NHS "You're pregnant - what next?" section.

Also, I am based in Scotland. The link to Scottish midwife services is separate to the English one and doesn't work properly (it is now scottish shared services and none of the listings are in my area), so I will try and get through to the GP first tomorrow to see where my nearest midwife is.

I have plenty of time as my fertility app (Natural Cycles) says I am 4 weeks plus 4 days pregnant.

My GPs reception booked me in with the midwife.

Hi! I have just had my baby and my gp never confirmed my pregnancy- I rang the doctors and booked on an early bird appointment which is how we do it up here. Went to that and they did bmi etc and then referred me to booking in appointment. You probably won’t have to go to gp but you’ll need to ring and ask them for a booking in appointment- you’ll need your bloods doing so they’ll need to see you xx

Thanks Bailey. I think they must have changed the Scottish website recently as it wasn't very helpful - it said it was the 'new home' for NHS stuff and I preferred the old one!

Update: managed to get through to surgery today and have booked my first appointment and first scan at the maternity centre near me. Due to get flu jab anyway because of my asthma, and our surgery is doing a "drive-thru" this year so looking forward to that. Everything is all arranged now, so I'm feeling a lot less stressed. :)
