Mirena removal

Hi all

I had the mirena coil removed on Wednesday - was seen at sexual health clinic as an emergency because i have had no end of problems with it since it was put in on 20 th January and as I had had another heavy bleed they told me to go in. Suspected partial expulsion so had to be taken out.

Bleeding since, heavier with clots and bad period pain. Is this normal?

Failed to ask what yo suspect after removal but as I have had a partial expulsion and complex gynae history, just wondering if I meed to see anyone?

I had the heaviest “period” going once my coil was removed, I also had major issues with mine, it ended after a week, but if you’re worried about the amount of blood and clots talk to your GP cos you could be anaemic and it might have caught something during the explosion so might need properly checking out xx

Thank you for taking the time to respond. Silly of me not to ask what to expect. It's just nice to know what's normal and every bit of reading I have tried to do myself seems to refer to the insertion rather then removal which makes me wonder whether the amount of bleeding and pain is normal. Not sure where I am in my cycle. I have had intermittent prolonged spotting since it was fitted with heavy bleeds (last episode about 10 days ago now) passing clots, clumps of tissue hence being seen as an emergency. At the time i thought that might be my period but now i'm not so sure and wondering if this is my period 🤔

I hate wasting doctors time but sometimes it's nice to get a bit of reasurance xxx

I struggled to work out when my cycle started too so completely wrote off the prolonged bleeding as a real period and assumed this was the “withdrawal bleed” my GP had warned me about, I then properly started tracking ovulation, BDing and my period from the next one which started a fortnight after the withdrawal bleed, I did notice my periods and cycles have been much longer since mirena, it’s been out 7/8 months now, and this (based on when I’ve ovulated this month) will be my first 28 day cycle, the rest have been anywhere from 38 - 30 days xx

Thanks for keeping in touch. I've made a note of the date when I started bleeding. Jist wish it would show some signs of easing. Take care and hopefully our bodies will settle down soon xxx

I’m hopefully getting mine removed next week.....after also having no end but trouble with it since I had it fitted at the end of March. I’m slightly worried about getting it removed though, did it hurt? X

Bless you, no it was okay actually. I had very mild discomfort but it came and went very quickly and was a very quick procedure. Nothing like having it inserted. That was an awful experience for me. I had taken paracetamol and ibuprofen an hour before at the advice of the clinic though. Honestly, it was fine and a relief to have it out after so many problems. It's just the symptoms i've had since which came on a day afterwards. Like very bad period pain and heavy bleeding (like a very heavy period). I can only assume that's what this is. My gynae history is a little complex and I think it's made me feel quite anxious about things 🙉

Hope it goes well for you lovely, take care. Do mention that you're anxious about how it will feel. I did and the nurse was so calm and took her time. Made a real difference xxx

I’ve had what seems like a very bad period since I’ve had it fitted aswell as two infections. I’m praying removing it goes well so that my body can rest. I’ll definitely make a note to mention I’m anxious and hopefully they will be able to help me relax cx

That's awful, i'm so sorry you've had such a rough time. The coil was sold to me by gynae as being a really positive step in helping all my gynae issues but sadly i've had no end of issues with it. It just didn't suit me. Psychologically I feel loads better for having it taken out. Definitely let them know about how you're feeling and maybe take some pain killers just to keep you as comfortable as possible. It was much better then I thought based on how it went for me when inserted. Good luck and fingers crossed you can get it removed soon xxx

Yup It was sold to me by Gynae too. They said it was the first line of treatment for endo and that it would do me the world of good having it in. Biggest mistake ever I can’t wait to have it removed xx

I'm really sorry you've had such a miserable time with it. I hope you can get it removed asap. Mine was inserted in January but in all honesty, i'm not sure it was ever in properly. It was a horrendous procedure, so much worse then I thought and I had terrible pain afterwards. So much so that I saw my GP to get it checked. She couldn't feel or see one of the strings but as I was due to have gynae surgery that week, she suggested the surgeon check it. Surgery was cancelled at the last minute (twice) so it was never looked at. Then COVID hit and I was refused to be seen at my GP clinic as all contraceptive clinics stood down. That's how I ended up being seen at the sexual health clinic and no surprise, partial expulsion. Just so glad to have got rid of it. Removing it was very quick and easy and I felt fine afterwards. Are you due to see gynae again for a review? It may be worth asking your GP to refer you back if the coil hasn't helped you. Take care xxx

I had to see my Gp about 4 days after having it fitted to get it checked as the pain was unbearable. I’m not due to see them for a review no they said they would see me again though if the coil didn’t work so guess it will just be another referral to them. Xx

That's exactly like me. I literally couldn't move afterwards i was in so much pain. You may still be under them if it hasn't been too long since you were last seen and they should be able to review you if the coil hasn't been helpful. It's all a bit tricky with covid but i would definitely ask your gp to write a letter for you. I really hope it goes well for you. Deep breathing helps a little too xxx

Just so people know it’s not all bad news, I’ve had two coils over about 10 years and didn’t have any problems with them either while they were in or during removal.

I am sorry to hear some of you had such a hard time with them, I hope you’re feeling better soon 😊

Hi Poppy, you should get in touch with the clinic as heavy bleeding and pain can be caused by perforation. They should have scanned your uterus because of your symptoms. They should have also given you aftercare advice - explain what to expect. If you don't feel like going at least give them a call. I hope you feel better soon xx

Thank you for your advice. I'm still cramping but less intense. Still bleeding but less severe. It's just so hard knowing what's normal and i'm finding it really hard accessing care at the moment due to covid. I guess i'm looking for some reassurrance that if I call someone tomorrow, i'm not going to feel like a complete idiot for wasting their time but given my history, I could do with a bit of reassurrance. Another positive coil story here. I had it for about 5 years and got it removed in December last year as we are trying for a baby. After a few months of getting it put in the strings disappeared. I had internal scans every so often to make sure it was still in place so it was fine. The only issue was explaining to the nurse at smear tests that yes I know the strings are not there and yes they have been checked.

I had the copper coil as I couldn't bear the hormones. I had heavier periods but I could deal with that as payment for no hormones going in my system. Because my coil had shifted a bit it was a bit difficult to remove so they had to numb my cervix and go in with forceps. But it only ever felt uncomfortable, not sore. I'm taking that as a sign that I'll be OK during childbirth 😁

Should have had a scan befire removal, which would probs have shown a fibroid or polyp

Some bleeding is normal. I asked a gynaecologist in a hospital i know, she said something like: what i posted above ... i have no idea what one of those is but she is an expert

Thank you for advice. It was my fault for not asking what to expect and clashing with a weekend is a bit frustrating. I've had a complex history (pph, awaiting surgery etc). Thought I had a heavy period about 10 days ago until now. Not a clue whether this is a period, withdrawal bleed or something else altogether. With my history and partial expulsion, i guess i'm a little anxious and looking for some reasaurrance. I'm passing heavy amounts with clots, double layering towels and still have some mild cramping 😟

I dont have experience with this but if bleeding seems excessive or you genuinally concerned see medical help. Just wear a mask . But it very important ppl seek help for urgent issues even with all that going on with Covid 19

Thank you yes I am going to call in the morning as some reasurrance would be good. It's my fault for not asking what to expect and typically it's been over a weekend. Thanks for your encouragement as it gives me the confidence I need to call and not feel i'm wasting peoples time xxx
