Mirena coil...

This might sound out of place on here I am just interested to see if anyone has got or had one fitted after labour. I went for my 6 week check and had swabs taken for the coil a couple of days ago but was in agony when she did the swabs. She said my stitches looked like they were healing well but I still look sore 'down there'. I am worried about pain when the fit the coil but also about infection as I have read good and bad reviews. I understand different things suit different people I would just like to hear your opinions! Thanks

I had it fitted several years ago and I had never been pregnant at that stage. It was agony to insert and I had a constant period for around 3months after having it in. But once it settled it was great. Best contraception ive had since being no longer allowed the combined pill due to my dad having a stroke.

The nurses did tell me that it is more sore for those who have never had children so you should be fine in that sense due to the cervix being softer. I cant comment on the infection side, depends on the place you are having it done it. I'd imagine it is very small chance of infection.

hope this helps xx

Having a period for 3 months sounds like contraception in itself!

Thanks for the reply. I am exclusively breast feeding so the doctor doubts I will bleed at all. She says it similar to an internal which are uncomfortable but have to be done I suppose! It's it just a simple case of them pulling it out when the time comes? X

removal is quite quick, there are the treads that dangle down the entire time it is in and u have to check for them regularly to ensure the coil hasnt moved. Its a little uncomfortable to remove but nothing unbearable. They just tug a little on the strings and it slides out, bit like a tampon x

Having had both copper and mirena coils, I prefered the copper as the hormones didnt agree with me, made me more scatty, and I didn't like the weight gain. The fitting is not the most dignified or comfortable (like most lady part things) because they have to grip the cervix, but the whole procedure takes only slightly longer than a smear test and as you've had a baby your cervix will be more compliant. I never suffered more than a slight bit of cramping shortly after for which I took paracetamol. My periods on the copper were not excessive and after a while I didn't bleed with the mirena at all (I only had that for a year then switched back to the copper).

Removal is twice as quick too and you can get preg very quickly! I had my copper coil removed on 3rd December 2012 and I'm due to give birth on 21st of this month to my honeymoon baby!! :)

Hi, I had my coil fitted about 10 weeks after my first (im now 32 + 3 with my second). I would recommend the copper coil as there are no hormones, this worked well for me as I dont handle hormones very well die to suffering from depression and anxiety too. I did however have the mirena coil fitted by the dr in error and I could tell within a day or so that they had put in the wrong one.

Fitting it was uncomfortable but nothing too bad and gettgin them removed was a doddle. I had always been on the pill before with very light periods lasting 2-3 days but having the coil made them very heavy and last about 5 days but I suppose you get used to that.

I would always forget to take the pill and hated the thought of taking hormones so after discussions with my dr this was definately the best option for me and I will be having the copper coil refitted after the birth of this little one.

Hope this helps

Thanks for the replies! Thought about it all week and I've chickened out! Tempted to have the injection again but the effects can last for upto a year after it 'runs out' which means very advanced future baby planning! My mum and sister both got infections and had to have them removed so I think I'll just play it safe and have something else! Think we should just make men have all the tablets and injections and such! Is labour not enough for us?! Thank you anyway!
