Injections

At my 28 week appointment my midwife put me on dalteparin injections as I scored a specific number on a dvt risk assessment scale. I am finding the injections very painful particularly after the injection, it stings like mad and is really uncomfortable and sore for some time after. I have tried a variety of injection sites but they are all the same.

Just wondered if anyone had any tips or similar experiences?

Thanks

Try using ice to numb the area first after the injection use some more and press down on the injection site. Don’t rub at it as this only makes the itch worse. Good luck x

I'm not on Dalteparin but on Tinzaperin (they are both a type of heparin).

I've noticed that with the Tinzaperin as well certain locations do sting during administration and after, especially if taken in the arm. I've noticed that the more "fatty" the site the less likely it is to sting.

I take mine on my outer thigh. The closer to my hips and waist the more it hurts and easier to penetrate the skin but the further down my leg I go, the harder it is to penetrate but it doesn't hurt as much coz its all just fat.

I've never administered in my stomach I don't pull enough fat there.

Hope that helps.

Thanks! I haven't managed my outer thigh as feel not fatty enough, inner thigh was really sore. Have been doing it on my tummy bear my hip as can pinch it when lean over. Absolutely hate these injections. Hope you are doing ok x

Yes this pregnancy is going well thank God. They point on aspirin and cyclogest (progesterone) as well because I had a still birth at 26 weeks and 5 early miscarriages.

I'm 19+2 today, haven't had any symptoms except cramping and lower back pain but everything is all good with baby so far.

Also I have an anterior placenta which was low at 12 weeks then moved up by 16 weeks.

How are you and how is your pregnancy going.

Hi, I am 29+2 now and so far have had a great pregnancy with very few negative symptoms! I had quite a lot of lower back pain in the first trimester but have not really been bothered with that since. It us my first pregnancy so not really sure what to expect! Had a bit of spotting tonight which I am a bit worried about, in bed now so hoping rest will be do me good. Think I have maybe overdone it a bit today. Hoping that's it!

I am glad they are looking after you and that the baby is doing well. Thanks again x

I hope the spotting was just because you over done it, how are you now?

Didn't have anymore after last weekend. Have struggled a bit this week just feeling tired but just taking it easy! Feels like not long to go then other times 10 weeks seems like ages!!

How have you been this week? Hipe all is going well x

That's good to hear, keep resting as much as you can.

I feel like the weeks are flying by, it took forever to get to 12 weeks and now I feel like I'm not getting enough time to enjoy my pregnancy.

Just got to 20 weeks and now it's like 21 is just around the corner.

I'm good this week, just found out where having a boy.

Cool pack before and after. I used the sort that kids have for bumped heads.

If you really can’t bear it, ask your pharmacist for some emla numbing cream.

Thank you so much! Have just done tonight's injection and it was not nearly as bad as last night's. Hope I am getting better at it and was not a fluke!! Dont think the air in the syringes help, was tempted to get rid of the air but the instructions say to leave it in! Thanks again for help!

No don’t get rid of the air! I was always glad when the syringe got to the air part as it stings less going in!

Try to wipe off any drops of liquid on the needle before you start though, this seems to help the stinging.
