I have a travel cot but have only used it for short naps or to put her in when I'm pottering around for a little while. Do you have the bassinet level? Mine doesn't so can't help with that one but the mattress is a loose base so you can use a flat sheet to cover the mattress. I use a sleeping bag (grobag) for my daughter so you could get away without a top sheet but they are only recommended for babies 8lb8oz and over. If your baby is smaller, maybe just swaddle them and put them in (unless anyone else has any experience and can offer any other advise).
Good luck with the birth! x
You can get fitted sheets that will fit a travel cot. We don't use ours often to be honest, but because I wasn't keen on using sheets and blankets (because my son likes to cover his face with any material he can lay his hands on!!) We just use the quilt we got with the bedding bundle for his big cot. It's slightly larger than the base of the travel cot, so I just tuck it in round the edges. It works really well as it add that bit of extra padding!
We have always used a gro bag, but as army wag said, they don't recommend them until baby is a bit bigger. We were so lucky as when Hugo was born it was the heatwave so the house was about 28° for the 1st Month of his life so he didn't need any bedding at all. By the time it started to cool down he was big enough for a bag!!
Swaddling is a good idea, it's a great way of keeping baby feeling safe, calm and warm!
Xx
hey Armywag!
thanks for your reply, i do have a bassinet for mine cus thats what i intend using for when he arrives i will try and get fitted sheet from the store to cover the flat mattress that came with the travel cot
hello Rachgibson, i will consider swaddling as well but is swaddling suitable for night sleep or??because swaddling means they cant move their hands and legs
Swaddling for sleeping is fine (although there are lots of opinions about swaddling now). Mine hates being swaddled as she likes her arms free - they are up above her head or out the side of the crib lol. When she was in scbu, a couple of the nurses used to swaddle her.
If you do swaddle, it's now recommended that their legs and hips are not tightly wrapped. A lot of babies like to be swaddled as, like Rachgibson says, they feel safe and secure (remember there is not much room inside of us mummies so they reckon its like being back in the womb).
Lol thanks for the reply.
My LO was swaddled for about 6 weeks, maybe more. It really settled him to sleep as he likes being snug & warm. It makes them feel secure as it reminds them of being in the womb. It also prevents them from waking themselves up if they have a strong startle reflex as their arms are wrapped up! For the first couple of weeks when he was tiny we just used a cotton muslin to swaddle then a thin sheet over the top, it worked wonders. After that we used a cellular blanket to swaddle without anything else on top. We then moved to a grobag. Some babies like swaddling but some don't, it's worth a try as it can mean they sleep so much better x
I used a travel cot all the time. Because I moved house he was in his travel cot for 6 months. I just used sheets that u would put in a cot bed. I used blankets + when he was old enough I used a baby sleep bag. I'm going to do the same with my little girl who is 4 weeks old.
thanks for all your replies. x
