I am breast feeding and expressing. The best bottles we have found is nuk ones from boots as the tommy tippee ones leaked and the teats were too big for my newborn son. All I need is breast pump, bottle brush and bottle steriliser. X x

I am breast feeding for nearly 6 weeks and did not and have not to date brought bottles or pumps. I posted a question a few days ago asking what pumps people liked as I will need to pump occasionally & I understand that if you haven't bottle fed within a certain period they may not take at all. They say to avoid nipple bottle confusion if your going to BF don't use bottle until 6wks+ when BF is well established xx

Hiya, my son is exclusively breast fed and we didn't introduce a bottle until he was over two weeks old he is now 16 weeks old and we gave had no problem with confusion other than occasionally he forgets how to 'work' a bottle if it has been a while. We were loaned a tommee tippee bottle, which thankfully he liked straight away (there again as long it was food, I got the impression he wouldn't mind). The we went and bought the steriliser kit but only after we were sure he liked the bottles. I do express regularly with a Medela swing electric pump (kindly given to me by a friend) and he will now take a bottle from my husband and the grandparents as long as it is the right temperature. If you can test drive a bottle first I would recommend it rather than committing yourself and your LO not liking it. Our health centre loaned bottles and pumps, which may be worth investigating? Expressing does take practice and you do need to be in the right frame of mind, if you can feed and express at the same time this helps or I have found stroking a pet at the same time (weird I know) but it gets the oxytocin levels up and the flow gets faster. X

I bought it incase something went wrong with bf but it hasnt so hav been bf since sept but I hav expressed but waited until about 4 weeks to do so so I used the steriliser and bottles but not right away but if u plan to express or combine feed..might b an idea. When is ur baby due cz if u dnt need it till after xmas u might get a btr deal then x

I'm BF, also express. We use Tommy Tippee - easily the best bottles :-). The large teat mean my LO 'latches' on to it much like a boob - I've not seen any if my friends LOs do this with Avent/NUK/Medela etc.

He's never had any trouble with nipple confusion (I don't even believe it exists - I think it's just another concept used to beat new mums up with!)

To begin with we had a couple of the 150ml bottles and the microwave steriliser, but soon bought more as LO was born jaundiced and was too up fed for two weeks. Xx

I combine breast and bottle and use tommee tippee anti colic. Their slow flow teets make LO work for it and he switches easily between breast and bottle with no trapped wind. I didn't introduce a bottle until 3 weeks. I have 4 bottles now as he takes a lot more but just started with 2. You can buy microwaveable steriliser bags that could save you buying a steriliser until LO has settled in and your confident in you feeding choice x

Hi ya,

My little one is just over two weeks old and although she is exclusively breast fed I did buy some Tommee Tippee colic bottles and I bought some aptimil ready made bottles for newborn's which I must confess I used two of them when it was really sore in the first few days.

I have since bought a manual breast pump to express but I have not done it yet as baby seems happy and content just with the breast.

I guess there is no harm in preparing for both. But 65.00 does seem a lot to spend if you are planning of breast feeding.

Good Luck x

Thanks for all the advice guys....so glad I asked before panic buying!! I'm sure the shops rely on first time mums to be just going on what they "think" they should buy rather than what they actually need. X

I also have some Aptimil 1st milk which is in ready to use bottles for emergencies which I brought before birth if you want something 'just in case' It's enough for 24hr feed. My OH used one so far rather then wake me to feed our son as I was so tired.

You can get this box in supermarkets for £8.99 I think.

Might be worry investing for assurance and also I thought what's the worst that can happen, we have a 24hr Tesco's Extra up the road if needed anything else xx

I brought Avent with my son but he was breast fed solely until one. I tried tommee tippee but found they leaked (mind you this was 6 and a half years ago).

I didn't use a single bottle with my daughter not even expressed.

We got tommee tippee kit and has come in handy. We do EBF but found brilliant in second week when had a lot of visitors to have expressed bottles to hand (Don't mind BF in front of people but easier when have lots of visitors at once - and made OH feel more involved). agree with drfluffy - def no confusion over where food comes from. In fact at first he hated the bottle as isn't mummy, but does feed well off them now. Did also buy formula on just in case and ended up with most of it all over me as he hated it! x
