My constipation is really bad and I've been taking fybogel and syrup of figs for thelast 4 days but I'm still struggling to go. .. was wondering if I could take senna now I'm nearly there? And was wondering why they tell u to avoid senna in pregnancy, I'm just getting so fed up with being so constipated now :(

I was told I could only take senna during my 2nd trimester as during third it can cause braxton hicks. I did take it a few times during this pregnancy and been fine. However, maybe check with your gp. It was my gp who told me it was safe.

Senna causes smooth muscle contraction - great for the bowel, less so for the uterus...

I asked for (and got!) an enema before my induction - didn't fancy a rock hard poo on the bed mid delivery ;-p. not sure what would have hurt more - pooing or birthing :-D

Could it cause me to have contractions? I Was having lots of tightenings on Fri when I first started taking the syrup of figs! And I was so uncomfortable I had to have a Bath which helped! But Might have to invest in some suppositories. .. I've got an enema here but its potent comes with a big bottle and u have to squeeze the contents up ur bum don't think I should use that actually is Prob out of date found it at the back of my cupboard the other week !

Yes - can trigger labour... Which means you're probably eating boxes of the stuff now... Right? ;-p

I had to take high doses of senna almost daily during my 1st pregnancy due to having a colostomy, I was also on other laxatives and enemas via the stoma. It did absolutey nothing to kick start labour thankfully, If anything it just caused Major pain which then made me sick as it was so stong.

Thanks good to know...I do suffer really badly and 2senna just gives me wind I usually have to take about 6 to go normally....I had an op on my bowel 4years ago and they said I had an unusually long bowel and they wished they had cut some away! But they didn't and I struggle everyday but these last few weeks have been awful :( how are u coping with a colostomy do u still have it ? X

My GP said that because its a stimulant it could stimulate your uterus as well as your bowels.
