Hi everyone, I just want to know about what you think about this perseverance rover on Mars and how much it as cost , shouldn't we be thinking about what is going on this planet never mind looking for life on Mars we need to wake up and realise that what is happening on our planet which isn't going away anytime now , I just think that money could be well spent on other issues we are faced with .

The ability to reply to this post has been turned off.

I think It’s a pivotal moment for NASA, perseverance for USA needed. The awareness is things are for what they are and we accept. All we can do is finding another way of living. Given America is already 27 trillion dollars in debt as of Oct 2020, and ongoing policies I don’t think it’s going anywhere. Mars it is 🤣😂😂

Mars is the fourth planet from the sun and similar to earth which should be explored. If we look at this universe as a whole, we can treat it as a future land. Maybe we can go up there and stop messing with the ecosystem and start being harmonious with the Universe. History has repeated itself with major plaques, conflicts, wars... Same actions won’t have different results. We can sit here all day and talk about millions of problems without having any concrete solutions or resources for that. Spend money to fix a torn tire or get a new one if we can afford it? So why not establish a new way of living, a new way of thinking ? Investment in Science research is a right way to reach for new possibilities. 🤗x

I couldn't agree with you more. I'm all for exploration and progression but when I think about how much it must have cost I can't help but think about people dying in developing countries from preventable diseases. Some people have to walk miles and miles to get to a tap that will provide them with clean drinking water. So e can't walk that distance to have to drink water infested with parasites.

Closer to home we have people relying on food banks, then there is heating poverty. I'll never forget looking after a dear old lady who had taken to eating tonnes dig food because it was all she could afford. This was in the time before food banks were widely available.

Then closer to home, on a personal note. I have a lifelong incurable rare disease which has seen only one new drug being developed for it in 50 years. There are a handful of people on HU with the same condition and would love some money to be invested in research and development of various rare diseases but because little is know about them it is hard to get funding.

Wherever the money came from for an exploration to Mars, I think it could have been used to benefit so many people in so many ways. That's my opinion anyway. Others may have a different viewpoint. But I'd rather put the money towards easing the suffering of fellow humans and developing ways to save the environment that looking for life on another planet.

Shouldn't we be looking after this plant first before we go exploring elsewhere?

I can see both sides to this . Money is set aside for different projects. We could argue it is a bad time to build HS2 but when the intro of many new motorways were built in the UK then many didn't want these either . We must make progress . It is hard in these difficult times to just think of today as we are today ,still in the height of a pandemic but just think of scientific progress which if stagnant would have given us no telephones , TV , Internet which has enhanced the way we research other things such as space exploration . This is far too complicated for me to understand but taking this simply I think we can't just think of today.

Are you not interested in that they could be proving that there COULD have been some sort of life on other planets, hope that there could be some sort of intelligence out there? When was the last time you looked in your waste bin, and seriously thought when they say "recycled" exactly how much of YOUR waste is properly used into serious products not more plastic bags or coverings? Recycled or unrecycled rubbish is still blocking ALL the oceans, when any life in the oceans is dying I am sure that is the last thing they are thinking when death comes to them, 'is this recycled or unrecyclable?' [In the last year in my pandemic isolation, I have had to weekly shop just at Tescos, the amount of unrecyclable 'stuff' has quadrupled in my blue/black bin!] Man has gone too far, like the age of the dinosaur, the age of the human is coming to its natural end, its ignorance and sloth its dependence on nature for their own personal comfort, nothing beats nature, now nature is winding down man's/woman's reign, their blind faith in their technological 'breakthrough's' , maybe humanity is looking for alternatives elsewhere, because they realise that their feeble attempts at saving their planet, earth, are past it, its too late!

After 5 of history’s worst pandemics such as: Plague of Justinian, Black Death, The Great Plague of London, Smallpox, Cholera; yet, there are still 7.8 billion people in the world. Absolutely Overpopulated! 🤯🤯🤯 Aren’t all airborne diseases spread because of densely populated areas?! Yes, even after Covid-19 pandemic ends, we are still overpopulated☝️Here’s the link to see current population growth each day: worldometers.info/world-pop...As of this year, the number of birth is still more than double the number of death. Hi, I understand where you are coming from but it just bothers me that we spend billions of pounds or dollars etc when you look around the world and wonder why there is no money available for better hospitals etc . I have lost 2 close friends to covid who were fit but we lacked the necessary ventilator not saying they would have survived but it would have helped . Hope you had a good day at work. Clive x 🤗

in reply to

Hi, Clive. I’m truly sorry for the lost of your two close friends. I am a healthcare worker, currently working at least 40 hrs a week witnessing illness and death so I understand your pain and concern about overcrowded and understaffed hospitals. I can sense your genuine concern so I’m going to share more deep thoughts on your post. It’s a global issue with government budgeting and check and balance are not run and distributed wisely for the people. Budget is prepared by the ministry of finance that holds pre-budget meetings with stake holders including state representatives, bankers, agriculturists, economists and trade unions. So you see as tax payers, we rely on our state representatives which obviously their decisions and that is when politics corruption, capitalism come in. Your post presented two separate issues, whether NASA is using government fund to build useless toys and government budgeting issues. Government budget is always going to be an inevitable problem so I don’t have any solution for that. Here’s my take on NASA: I’m grateful for its contribution to a world of breakthrough medical advances in healthcare such as: digital image breast biopsy system, laser angioplasty using fiber optic catheters, LED for help in brain cancer surgery, mold free artificial arm and legs, programmable pacemaker......and many more. Even education is not free and costly for college students almost everywhere in the world. Students graduate with loans and can’t find decent jobs of their majors. From where I’m original from, there are more churches and temples than schools and hospitals. More priests and monks than teachers and healthcare workers. It’s happening everywhere in the world. That’s the major issue for me to wrap my head around. If the people can donate and build churches and temples, supporting full staffs of priests and monks so why can’t they help building more schools and hospitals ?!!! 🤯🤯🤯 I am more interested in reaching for new way of living and possibilities than any religions, politics, and nations. Scientific researchers will of course require a large amount of money to run their experiments but the benefits outweigh the cost. NASA’s perseverance rover was made to search for signs of microbial life, collect rock core samples...which will return these samples to Earth for a deeper study. It paves the way for human exploration that beneficial to our mankind. When we are too involved in the detail of a problem, we can’t see the forest for the trees. Take care 🤗x

happytulip profile image
happytulip in reply to

What you said about the medical side of things, from one medic to another....Amen to that!

in reply to

I get what you are saying my friend but in your country to ours there is a difference as I have been to the states numerous times you have a system where people pay for there medical treatment here it's free but you can jump the queue if you pay private , another thing I saw was prisoners out there contribute to society not stuck inside which I thought was good . I will show you a problem over here I worked for about 30 years until I was struck down I now rely on benefits and my private pension I was paying into for when I retired , but somebody who doesn't want to work gets everything paid for and a cosy life that tells me there is something wrong with our system . Sorry for the rant it seems I started a post about Mars and ended up talking about other issues . Clive x 🤗

in reply to

No worries, we are here to share our own experiences and awareness. Everywhere, the system is rotten in the hands of political parties. In my perfect world, there’s no need for any of them but individual should stand on his own existence. People are far more intelligent, not mechanical now to see beyond the false promises, tricks, exploitations of politicians. There’s no need for any of them. We need intelligence, we need scientists. For instance, if you need a finance minister, all the great experts you have in economics and finance can compete for it, and someone can be chosen for it. The real power is in the scientific world. Once government comes into the hands of the scientists, then everything is possible. Off to work now. Have a great week ahead Clive. 🤗x

But is it not unethical to say "well we've ruined Earth so let's all move to Mars and slowly destroy that planet too." I can't see how that is solving a problem, to me it's just moving a problem. Make sense?

What else can we do though? I never said the goal was to move and destroy another planet. It's not about ethics but about survival. When we mature a little more we can be more ethical and live in harmony.

Unfortunately, I have no clue as to what the answer is. But it just seems to me that there are those who care about the environment and those who don't. Perhaps I'm being cynical but it seems to be the natural behaviour of humans as a collective to be more destructive than protective. I appreciate that it is a sweeping generalisation but I can't see the human race being proactive about protecting their planet. I know some do to a big degree but others could not care less.

A small example. I am severely limited with my mobility yet so make every effort to recycle, re-use re-whatever I can to limit my waste.

My next door neighbour actually works in a recycling centre and puts EVERYTHING in landfill. I have literally Never seen them use their recycling bin and they just Chuck stuff out on the street. It bothers me because there I am seperating the plastic from the paper with envelopes, using grey water in my garden and they are doing the polar opposite. I try not to judge but I find it astonishing that someone who works in a recycling centre couldnt care less. And they have kids. So sad

I believe that fiction sometimes becomes truth. Just watch the movie with Matt Damon called "Contagion" I watched it when it first came out and then again after this pandemic was in full mode and this time around I was astounded that a fictional film like this was so close to the truth that is was frightening. So I just read a piece that 3.5 billion years ago Mars had atmosphere, lakes etc that could have or maybe supported some form of biological life but when the magnetic polarity of the poles changed the atmosphere went and so did the water. I read this today on my NASA time magazine weekly essay from Jeff Kruger. The magnetic polarity of our north and south poles are playing up and one day the same thing could happen to earth. Or a large asteroid may wipe us out . I can see a time many centuries from now if we survive till then that humans may have to leave a dying earth and settle on another planet so space exploration is important not just to find evidence of ancient life but maybe just maybe an escape from a doomed planet for some humans- remember truth can be stranger than fiction. Besides it is important for the human being race to find out if we truly are alone in this ever expanding universe -it is the ultimate question for mankind but if there is an answer it will come a very long time after all of us on this forum have gone.

Man has always had a feel for exploration, and without that drive many countries would still be in isolation.I think this journey to Mars has been an amazing sense of achievement of what man is capable of.

However the cost of this endeavour has been enormous, and one does question why do this when man has millions of people in poverty, and many illnesses are still looking for a cure, such as cancer.

But we must realise if these vast costs of exploration were cancelled it would'nt mean that that money would go towards health and help for the human race,it just would'nt.

Sadly this is how the world has always been.

Absolutely right our hospital where I live as no A/E we have to travel fourteen miles to the nearest one that is putting lives at risk and are the Government bothered not one bit they would rather save the money and waste it elsewhere. Clive x 🤗

Sir David Attenborough has quite rightly said that we are exhausting the natural resources of this planet and that on 500 years time it will be a barren wasteland. Therefore we need to find somewhere else to live otherwise the human race will die out out. Having said that, looking at what is happening throughout the world it may not be a bad thing. We have known about them for some time, yet we haven’t stopped decreasing the natural habitats of creatures that cause the mutations and transference of viruses. Too many agendas and different opinions. Finding a habitable planet or the development of one to become habitable, could take centuries. The pictures on TV show a barren wasteland, that may well have once been similar to our planet. Clearly, Mars needs a useful atmosphere. However, there are vast swathes of our own land that need trees to attract rain. If we could re-forest our deserts, we wouldn't need to be looking for a new planet to inhabit.

It's interesting to look at Mars from every point of view but if we can't look after our own people and our own planet, what is the point of making such a time/money-consuming project a priority? Humans have got their priorities upside down.

Hello Littleboy

It does seem like a waste of money when faced with other problems the world has. Spending money on climate change is also a huge waste of money, but environmental damage is a real issue and not to be confused with climate change. The space exploration program in it's defense has generated tons of very useful by-products. I used to get a free NASA publication on patented product information given free to anyone who wanted to develop that idea or product for commercial use. This free publication was used as a means to show us that the space programs were not a waste of money. The assumption the space program is a waste is debatable, but the mars rover I feel is a waste. Blessings.

Frank860 profile image
Frank860

I think most people who brand space exploration as a waste of money know little about scientific and technical advancement. To say that we must put our own planet in order before going elsewhere are saying, in effect, that we will never leave the Earth because, let's face it, we will always have problems here which need to be addressed.

In the 1960's, Sam Phillips, the Apollo programme manager said something along the lines of: "It's not a case of whether we should build more hospitals and schools or explore space; this nation is rich enough to afford both." He was right then and the same kind of argument is even truer today. Many of the advances brought about by space research have produced benefits which are valuable in our lives here on Earth. What better example can there be for us to witness manned outposts elsewhere in the Solar System where every breath of air, drop of water or scrap of food has to be recycled as often as possible purely to survive? Lessons learned from this experience will help to conserve our dwindling natural resources here on Earth, as well as finding new resources elsewhere.

In 1902, Konstantin Tsiolkovsky said: "Earth is the cradle of humanity but mankind cannot live in a cradle forever." Mankind needs challenges just as much as it needs air, food and water. To turn our backs on space would be to cut off our future. Look at the bigger picture, people, and dare to dream!

Dahlia7 profile image
Dahlia7

Man is a curious creature by nature. It is why there have been explorers throughout history. It is why people go into research. It is a part of intrinsic human nature to ponder the unknown and pursue knowledge. The absolute joy and exhilaration of the people at that command center at the completion of the landing was heartwarming. A triumph of much collaboration and hard work. This spirit is an example of the best part of our species. I think it is very important to nourish and acknowledge this aspect of ourselves. Man’s knowledge builds like an inverted pyramid. As we learn more about different things and areas it very often sheds light on other areas. The space program has contributed to our understanding of many other aspects of our lives and existence. It has resulted in advancements in medicine and physiology and even brought us post-it notes.

I don’t believe we need to choose between solving problems on this planet and a space program. I think man needs to work on both. One will very likely help the other. There are a lot of problems to be solved and we have enough people and resources to work on multiple things simultaneously. And we must realize the relationship and relative importance of them all going forward. Let’s not doubt and underestimate our collective abilities.

hi littleboy;

going to mars, and to jupiter and back to the moon - all these things are CRITICAL to advance human civilization.

do you think the apollo missions to the moon were a waste of money?? the technology developed and knowledge we acquired to get there - are the reasons we have the technology and medical advances we have today!!!! the knowledge we acquired FROM those missions - ALSO the reason we have the technology and advancements in medicine we have today!!!!

the moon shots also gave us something else... gave us hope; gave us wonder; gave us more questions and curiosity... what is life without those things???

the mars missions are exactly the same. they give us something to hope for; something to look forward to. and the advancements that come from these missions will propel humanity into the 22nd century - into a world we can only imagine! and that assumes our world will still be here - well - it certainly will still be here - but whether it'll be able to support human life - well that's another question. we NEED to expand our civilization to other worlds if our species is to survive the ages. history of this planet teaches us that. to NOT push beyond this world - is to condemn us to extinction. frankly - i'm not sure that's a bad thing... but i'm guessing you would think it bad - so thus - it's imperative that we push outward.

I for one am really pleased they went. It gives me a sense of hope that we won't be dealing with the pandemic forever. Remember also, that it's through investing in science based work that we know have vaccines to combat the virus.

I entirely agree with your thoughts and comments.Owing to man's greed for profit and wealth he has polluted thee earth. the air, the sea and all he has ever touched. Our great creator God created the earth perfect but sadly man has left God out of his life and turned to his own selfish reasoning denying that our great triune god exsists and has promised to return in power and judgement to restore the damage mankind has done.

The people of earth have a better existence now compared to generations gone by largely due to scientific and technical advances so, to claim that you aren't interested in such things but care more about the people on Earth at this moment in time is pretty short-sighted.
