His legs were broke, his wounds did bleed,

The soldier called him ‘Noble Steed’,

And put a bullet through his brain.

Then the soldier kneeling down,

Bent his head and cried,

‘You were the noblest beast of all,

Did your duty - answered the call’,

And I am filled with grateful pride

Through all the charges you carried me,

And never did you falter.

Though bullets whistled past your side,

And many men and horses died,

Your pace would never alter.

And so my friend this isgoodbye,

I’ve done my best for you,

I’ve sent you to a safer place,

Where horses graze in gentle grace,

And wish I could go too.

Then in the sky above all noise,

He heard a singing lark.

He felt it was an Angel’s song,

And knew his life would not be long,

As the sniper’s bullet hit its mark.

They found them lying side by side,

A soldier and his noble Steed,

What sacrifice by man and beast,

Too high a price to pay for peace,

More than God and Man agreed.

Oh goodness Bazzak, that was so hard to read, I had to stop a few times to wipe my eyes, hubby too, he had to leave the room before I had finished reading it out. It really is such a beautiful poem though and thanks for sharing it. The picture is amazing and heart-wrenching too. It's unbelievable that some people still abuse them, dogs and other animals too, when they are such intelligent, loyal and noble creatures who would die for us gladly. xx

This was so sad to read, brought tears to my eyes. A very beautiful poem, thankyou for sharing! Xx

That's beautiful Bazzak. Thank you so much for sharing it. Someone always places a wreath for the animals who served in both world wars at our local cenotaph. (It always makes me cry, too!)

So sad Bazzak, its said that men rarely choose to go to war, its an absolute fact that animals NEVER choose to go to war, beautiful verse about a beautiful creature xx

I'm going to cry. That is beautiful. Thanks for sharing this today.

Beautiful and true. There is a special bond between horse and rider. I have had to give up and I miss my horse every day.

I was so pleased to see the memorial to all the animals who have served in the military and still do. They deserve to be remembered too.

Thank you for posting.

Thank you for sharing this Barry, just absolutely beautiful and very sad and emotional.

Sniffle. Onion fairy flypast there. I can be an over emotional idiot sometimes, but it was so beautiful!

Cheers, Midori
