Good morning everyone,
Today's St George's Day, he being the patron saint of England. He was chosen as our patron saint by King Edward III in AD1330 and is generally known for his legendary fight with a dragon.
The legend of George slaying a dragon and rescuing an innocent maiden from death is medieval.
Very little is known about the real St George. He is thought to have been born into a noble Christian family in the late third century in Cappadocia, now a region of Turkey. He followed his father's profession of soldier in the service of the Emperor Diocletian. The emperor ordered the systematic persecution of Christians and George refused to take part. In AD 303, he was himself tortured and executed in Palestine, becoming an early Christian martyr.
April 23rd is said to be the day of George's martyrdom which is why he's celebrated today. And the pictured rose is the floral emblem of St George.
Today's quotation is therefore about courage in standing up for what you believe to be right.
This is very short but I think very true.
"From caring comes courage". Lao Tzu
To all our English members I wish you a happy St George's Day and a happy and pleasant day to you all.
