I appreciate my query is not that vital but since being diagnosed with PMR my hair has become really dry and brittle , I’m currently on 5mg down gradually from 25mg
I’ve tried every conditioner without any improvement
Has anyone else experienced this and I wondered whether it’s due to my age (71) the Pred or or the PMR itself?
Or any suggestions?

Hi Annie. I don't know if you realise that this is the Positive Wellbeing forum not the PMRGCAuk site, it doesn't matter if you meant to post here as you're welcome anyway. I can tell you that I am the same age as you but I have RA and I am on Methotrexate. My hair is a mess - it used to be so nice and shiny but not anymore. The MTX made it fall out in upsetting amounts but I think (although I'm not sure), that the condition of it may be due to the RA. If you find anything that helps maybe you can let me know and vice versa. All the best. x
I can't help with whether this is a result of medication, but I can say that poor hair condition and hair loss are extremely common after the age of 70. As your skin becomes drier in older age, so does your scalp and your hair.
Maybe a member of the PMRGCAuk would be able to say whether your condition or the medication is a further problem.
Hi Annie. Prednisone can affect your hair. Have you tried hair oils? I damp my hair each day and apply a leave in conditioner. I don’t blow dry it or anything or use any other products unless I am going out.
I lost hair when i first was diagnosed with lupus. I was told it was an early symptom. The loss stopped and the hair turned oldly fuzzy. As it grew back I had the hairdresser trim it. After about a year the fuzz was gone and real hair replaced it. I am 73. My hair doesn't look as shiny as it used to but I think it looks pretty good. There are small areas that seem a little bare still. My hairdresser recommended a very fine powder that shades the scalp making it almost normal looking. That was 6 years ago. Good luck. Give it a bit of time. When it is safe find a good hairdresser.
