Had a walk through our lovely park this week and thought I would share the magnificent Monkey puzzle trees with you. They are truly wonderful and I think of the stories they could tell. The oldest have been there for many years and one was blown down in a gale a few years ago. Rather than just dispose of it it was cut up into several planks which were then carved by a local tree artist. I will take photos of the carvings later this week but for now here are the trees.

Yes they really are magnificent. I look forward to seeing the carvings. What a lovely way of re using them.

I just love Monkey Puzzle trees. I often see one in someone's front garden when I walk the dog a certain way. It has actually grown so large it is taking up all the space in their front garden but it is a magnificent specimen. Haven't seen so many of them all together before.x
I’ve never seen one before. They are really unusual looking. How did they get such an odd name?
Apparently they got their name because monkeys were unable to climb them.

My grandparents had one in their garden, it fascinated me when I was small!
The scientific name is ARAUCARIA.
They are very strange trees indeed, but also here in Italy I have seen some of them in small gardens, i think because they are very easy to manage (no leaves to collect😏!)

The Monkey Puzzle (auracaria) is a tree from Prehistoric times, a real living fossil! I have a piece of fossil Monkey Puzzle.

Those are really fine specimens kitchengardener2. I've always found monkey-puzzle trees fascinating and somehow always feel delighted when I catch sight of one. I'll look forward to seeing those carvings! 👍🙏
