The Grenadier built in 1720 as the officers mess for senior infantry regiment of the British army, located in the courtyard of the Foot Guards barracks. It was opened to the public as a tavern in 1818 named the Guardsman, but then renamed the Grenadier in honour of the Grenadier Guards at the battle of Waterloo. You would have real problems finding this pub as it is hidden away in a small mews near Hyde Park Corner. Notable people who have used this inn, include The Duke of Wellington, king George IV, Madonna and Prince William. There are thousands of monetary notes stuck to the ceilings, these have been placed by customers to appease the ghost of Cedric, Legend has it that Grenadier is named after young Cedric, a soldier who was caught cheating at cards and punished by being beaten to death. No one knows exactly when this ghastly deed occurred, but it is thought to have been in September as that is when ghostly happenings are rife. Visitors hang money from the ceiling in an attempt to pay his debt, but poor Cedric seems to remain trapped on earth.

If you want to know more about Cedric, check out the link below.

Good evening Barry

Such an interesting pub, history and photographs. l knew the area around Hyde Park Corner very well, l have to admit that I have never paid a visit to The Grenadier . It really must be well hidden.

Any walking plans for your weekend? Many places will receive a shower or two by the weather forecast. A little cooler now which will help you with your walking travels.

I wish you and your wife a wonderful weekend, take care, Tim.

You would be very hard pressed to find this one Tim, it's in a news called Wilton Row near Grovenor Gardens. It can't have any passing trade as it is virtually at the end of said mews. As for the weekend, the wife has just told me that Saturday and Sunday we have different daughters and grandchildren on each day, so unless I want to be hung drawn a quartered I'm staying in !. πŸ™‚

Love to you and your wife and have a lovely weekend,

regards Barry

It must be interesting to live where all the buildings have a history even the pubs! This one looks like a cozy retreat.

Do you believe?, I am quite willing too, but I have experienced nothing, yet the wife and daughter reckon there is one in our house ????. It's probably me sleep walking. 😁x

I am open minded, sometimes when you walk in a room and the atmosphere is heavy, I can feel that. πŸ˜±πŸ˜„

I'm sure my first home had a ghost it was over 100 years old and I'd often get up and find something in a different place and not just little things. Once lost a pan and few days later found it in outside bin!! I DEFINITELY didn't put it there

My son is just buying a cottage as his first home . His friends don't understand him but just wait until they see it.

Hello Bazzak

I assume the same fate would befall any who cheated and tried to remove the money from the ceiling!

Hello Bazzak

I admit I did watch Monty Python, but then again I am noted for my dry sense of humor. There is a lot of funny things in life.

Well I must admit, as I walked into the bar, a cool breeze hit me in the face. So in anticipation, I bought two pints for us, but I had to drink them both, just my luck !. πŸ˜πŸ‘x

As usual, great photos.I was up in Wardour St on Thurs at the hairdresser's.I went for a walk round Berwick St, Carnaby St etc and it was so miserable .Several shops/ cafes closed down, few people around. It all looked so bleak. Such a contrast to the last time I was there back in February. So sad. I hope it all revovers.I've never seen Oxford St so empty. It would have been a good chance to go shopping but my heart just wasn't in it

Which is most unusual for me😊

Have a lovely weekend with your familyx
