On the way to our cabin in the Sierra Foothills, near Stockton a very nice dog got run over right in front of us. Some sort of Alaskan dog, young. Had a broken leash and came from nowhere across the highway.

The truck in front of us ran over it. Ugly to see. Lucky thing it was a tall truck. Jacked up. The dog got tumbled around under the truck.

So we stopped, blocked the highway, got the dog in the median with lots of blood in its mouth, injuries to its tongue, and a few bangs on the head, swollen face. I thought punctured lung. But the bleeding stopped. So no lung issue.

I called 911 who connected me to animal control. They wouldn’t give me an ETA for response.

I sort of went ballistic and had it out with the supervisor. I wanted the ETA.

I said you have a radio and cell phone. Call the field unit and ask. He said we don’t do that.

I said that is really poor public service, he is there to help our society, maybe he should do it just once and see if it makes someone happy. That way he won’t get irate phone calls and his life would be easier.

Additionally, what would his department look like if the media got to us before his unit and we reported that we couldn’t get an ETA. We might have been there to midnight waiting, not knowing if anyone was coming or not.

He said we don’t have to stay there which really fired me up. Of course we have to stay there. It’s the right thing to do. I asked him what he would do then said he would probably do the same as us. He wouldn’t answer.

I was sort of hot at this point.

In the meantime the guy who ran over the dog came back. Boy did he feel bad and tried to get a vet to help. He wasn’t successful.

Then the Sheriffs Office called to say animal control was 10 minutes out. Maybe I struck a nerve. Who knows and I don’t care.

But, at least the dog is being cared for and should survive. A nice one too.

Anyone need a dog? We have two already: Old Ike and our son’s dog.

The more I have to interact with bone heads the less I want to.

Well, tomorrow will be a nice long bike ride and I can forget about the whole mess.

All except for that nice dog.

I just wanted the dog cared for.

I really hate pea brains and dumb policies.

Supposedly they will call back and tell us how the dog is doing.

If needed would have paid for everything and taken the dog. Old Ike likes a good dog buddy.

What a terrible thing to happen daveh121. Will they be able to find the owner. What will happen to him when he’s fixed up. All dogs in the UK have to be tagged so their owners can be traced. I hope he’s ok. 👍👍

daveh121.

Thank you for your kindness to the poor dog, hope it fully recovers to full good health...... I have a Staffordshire Bull Terrier, she is 14 years old and a loved member of our family.😀

It’s always hard when a pet goes missing. I hope the owner can be found, or at least a new home. The dog deserves that.

I don’t know if the owner will be found. I hope so.

Thank you for stopping and caring for the poor dog.

I truly cannot understand some people's attitude.

Hoping you enjoy your weekend knowing you did your best for the four legged friend.

Hello Dave

What a terrible experience for everyone including one of our dear furry friends. 😥

Thank you Dave for doing all that you did, l can fully appreciate your frustration with the powers that be. I can never get my head around this type of red tape!

You did so very well for this furry who needed you desperately in it’s hour of need.

We must just pray now that the vet can work a few miracles. If you hear, please let us know.

Enjoy your bike ride, how is all the fruit and vegetable harvesting going?

A special hug for Old Ike 🤗.

Stay safe, best wishes, Tim.

We have a little break from the harvesting and preserving since a week of fog and cool weather slowed things down a bit. There will be plenty more to do in a week or so.

Somehow I will be surprised to hear anything back but I hope I do.

I’ve had a few nice rides so far.

Today is a few fix it projects, tomorrow is kayaking, birding, and fishing, which will be nice.

Thank you Dave for your message,

Your plans for tomorrow sound amazing to me, I am still on lockdown here. I would much prefer to be able to be out and about and get myself to a good river or coast to do some serious fishing and end the day with a good fish BBQ. Too many years since I was able to go fishing.

Take care and enjoy yourself, best wishes, Tim.

The BBQ at the end of the day is the best isn’t it?

We are still somewhat locked down but going outside and away from everyone seems ok.

Thanks!

Have a great day. I will be thinking of you.

Where you are is probably one of the best living solutions, definitely away from high density living. I fear that the lockdown is here for the long haul, worldwide, sadly.

Best wishes Tim.

What a dramatic thing daveh121 and horrible to see. I want to thank you for standing your ground in the face of adversity to get urgent help for an animal in such distress. For some people, animals come a very poor second to people, but they deserve to be always treated with dignity and for their basic needs to be put on the same level as that for humans. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

I hope this hasn't spoiled your weekend and I hope that you feel you did a wonderful job in insisting on urgent care for this animal. May many blessings come to you.🙏

How awful. I ran a dog over once. Same thing big vehicle and the dog was ok thankfully. I hope the dog is micro chipped so it can Be returned to the hopefully loving owner. Horrible thing for you to witness x

Yes they were looking for the chip but couldn’t find one. Maybe they could later.

Thanks.

Aww dave, that really was a wonderful thing you did there for the poor thing. I hope it survives with the minimum of after effects if any. You are good people and true animal lovers, good on you. Someone, somewhere may be missing it but if not, I really hope it gets a good and loving home with people as good as you and your wife. xx

Thank you so much.

How awful Dave for that to happen, what an awful thing to witness. I think you definitely did the right thing and there's no way I would have left a dog laying their dying as that's what could have happened.

I'm afaid I would have also been like you and would have lost my patience to the other person on the end of the phone, surely it's not difficult to provide an ETA.

Anyway, I'm so glad you were there to help and I hope you enjoy your bike ride today.

You are so nice. Thank you. It is comforting.

I think the dog should have survived with decent care . I am not confident with the responding agencies will do what is needed.

I am hopeful of a call back. I would pay for everything if needed then find a home for her. She is a good dog.

in reply to daveh121

You are welcome and what a heart rending thing to experience.

I really hope and pray that the dog will, I sure hope so.

You are such a kind and caring person and I do hope you get a call back.

Take care

Thank you. I hope to get a call back telling me what happened. The way things are I don’t expect it which is very sad.

This really struck a cord with me. I remember driving back home one Saturday afternoon and coming across a little old Heinz 57 style terrier wandering in the middle of the road. No owner in sight and cars just avoiding it. I stopped and lured him into my car and took him home. I then rang the dog warden who didn't work weekends and the police. They made a note of the dogs details (no collar) and suggested I ring the dog warden. I told them I had.. so they said the other option was to take him back to the place I had found him and leave him there! I asked if they would take him but they wouldn't so I rang our local dog rescue, a lady that I knew. She was so cross at the way I had been dealt with that she said to leave it with her and she would call me back which she did. They had a kennel at Brighton Police Station so I ended up driving down there. Fortunately the dog was reunited with its owner so the story ended happily but it made me question our love of animals. I would have looked after the dear little dog myself but I already had a rescue dog who wasn't good with other dogs.

That is a good ending. Very insensitive of some the people who are supposed to help though.

Good for you on being able to figure something out and following through.

That’s pretty traumatic.

You are right: things happen quickly and we have to respond as best we can with what we have.

It helps when the agencies responsible for helping us out do their job with a bit of empathy.
