My wife found a very nice multi-colored red chicken in the woods. In the middle of nowhere.
We caught her and brought her home to our coop. Boy was she happy, ate a ton of food and drank gallons of water.
Tomorrow we will let her mingle with the other hens. I think she is an Americana. Great breed known for their independence and heartiness.
We used a chicken catcher from our neighbor. Basically a long metal rod with a hook on the end that you snag the chicken’s leg with. Worked like a charm.
My guess is that she was dumped in the woods after someone got her for eggs during the lockdown then got tired of her.
She likes people, ate out of my hand. We are calling her plum since that is what she was eating when we found her.
What a great find and a lucky chicken.
Maybe she can teach our seven year old hens how to lay an egg now and then again. They are in semi-retirement now.

It's a good job you found her after being dumped. I think plum, is a fine name for a chicken. She must have been very happy to get some proper food and some water. 😊
Lucky Plum!! I miss my chickens, very few people realise what amazing characters they have. Mine were named after lady detectives: Rosemary and Thyme, Marple, Precious (the detective from Botswana) and Basil (the mouse detective, ok not a lady, but followed R&T in the herbs!!) .
We had an English bull terrier called Plum, we used to call her Lump!
Yes, you are right there! . My family kept chickens, ducks and bantams. and, as a child, loved collecting the warm eggs from under the hen.
Dave's new hen will be bossed around for a bit and as the saying goes,,, will eventually find her place in the order of the pecking order! I just love it!
There's always a grain of truth in these little sayings.
She is doing well so far. We kept her in her own box for a day then let her out. She is trying to stay out of trouble, so far the other hens are staring at her but leaving her alone.
That is wonderful. How lucky that you found her.Poot thing-it sounds as if she was desperate for some tlc .Brought a tear to my eye reading about her.I'm so pleased she will have a loving home.
She is good so far. Having fun running around and eating things. The other hens seem to know there is a new kid on the block and are no one is bothering her too much.
