This is fairly scientific but an interesting read. Its certainly contrary to many people's beliefs including mine.

I've also posted this on the IBS group.

I think that probiotics are a con anyway myself!

After reading that I won't be buying them and wasting my money

This is of no surprise. If you look at the research on any health product, for example, multivitamins, a whole range of products solely aimed and purposely targeted at people with health problems, you will find, the majority of what they try and make us believe, through fancy advertising and a multi million pound drive for sales, that the research doesn't hold up. Their main aim is to make us buy their product. I think anyone taking any kind of supplement should really look into the background of the product before wasting their money. I think it's great you have brought this to attention. xx

Your reply put me in mind of someone who's been trying to sell my mum and dad a particular product for ages (thankfully they've managed to resist).

It is, of course, the statin drug being pushed by primary (GPs) and secondary healthcare practitioners! Lol.

Anything prescribed by a medical Doctor should be taken, I am of course talking about over the counter health products, but if you are in the UK, it would be highly irregular for medics to be selling and pushing stations, when the usual ones are known to work satisfactory. So , I would certainly be doing my homework on that one.👍😊

Sorry but I strongly disagree and I'm in the UK. There are numerous examples of medics urging/pushing statins (maybe to promote its 30bn/y sales?) despite known serious sides. For example, one continues to bully my mum to take them despite accepting they can cause liver damage when challenged.

And I have several examples disputing your 1st sentence just in my family. Hence we avoid medics like the plague!

Yes, most medications do have side effects and it is known that statins can cause a deterioration in liver function and when this occurs the medication will normally be reduced or stopped. It is also known that statins have benefits. It is the duty of the health care professional to give the patient all the information, this includes benefits and disadvantages of, any medication, procedures, alternatives, surgeries, therapies, in order for the patient, or the patient's representative to make an informed choice. xx

They had tried to push statins on my aunt who had told them to get lost!

Well done, Aunt! I find it incredible that many people doubt natural products (including supplements) but believe everything a medic says. I agree with researching everything first but that should include pharmaceuticals like statins.

PS The medic pushing them onto my mum only agreed with the liver side effect when my dad told him he'd found his bilirubin had more than doubled long after he came off statins. Eventually it returned to normal after which his GP agreed they were the cause!

I have had my doubts but wasn't sure until I read this article. I do take multivitamins at the moment as my diet isn't the best with following the Low Fodmap Diet as a fair bit is cut out but as soon as my diet is tailored to me I will look at obtaining more natural vitamins.

You are right that the health industry is targeting those with health problems. The advertising is right there to draw you in and boy don't they do that with 'this can do that for you and you will feel so much better if you take this'. I find the worse offenders are those that use celebrities and the celebrity concerned hasn't even tried the product.

Thank you and I thought it important to post it.

Hope you've had a good day so far.

A lot of these supplements are a load of rubbish and a marketing con in my view and a rip off!

They can help it depends but you need prebiotic foods too. They also sat Manuka honey aids in probiotics doing their jobs. Some probiotics I’ve taken just crap other times & ones def good. I agree a lot of supplements waste of time I have tons why they didn’t work. Basic ones the best.

in reply to

Yes agree you do need prebiotic foods and I think that's the way to go by having a good diet. The problem with probiotics is they are not tailored to anyone's specific gut i.e. you can spend a lot of money and they do nothing for you.

Hi Alicia,

Just to say for anyone who isn't familiar with the initials AGA, this is the American Gastroenterological Association, just so you have a point of reference. (I didn't know and had to look it up.)

Really interesting Alicia, and is contrary to a great many people's belief, so probiotics may well have been doing more harm than good in many cases. Like all things medical, there's always something new to be learned.

I'm old enough to remember when having a gastric ulcer took months of special diet and treatment to cure, and then the breakthrough in knowledge of helicobacter and simpler treatments through antibiotics. And a similar and even greater story in tuberculosis.

So many times medicine thinks it is doing the right thing, only to eventually have to overturn its own former advice!

in reply to

Hi Hidden , thank you for looking that up.

It really is contrary to most people's belief and maybe the best way to go would be to follow what Dr Michael Mosley says in his book 'The Clever Guts Diet Book', it's a very interesting read and go with natural pre and pro biotics but having a varied diet. A varied diet is always the best way. Oh we are learning all the time and it's a minefield, just like our gut biome is.

I'm also old enough to remember how long it took to recover from a lot of operations, there was no such thing as keyhole surgery and of course antibiotics, we've come a very long way and all for the better.

I agree and it can take many years to realise that maybe something that the scientists thought were good for us 20 years ago now realise it's not but that's learning.

Hope you've had a good day so far.

Alicia xx

Hi Jerry, I'm with you there for taking them if you've had to take antibiotics other than that I think I will save my money. Eating sourdough I know will help me because of the way it's made with the natural bacteria in the air being used to make it.

You are welcome and I found it interesting as well.

Hope you've had a good day so far.

Alicia :)

I agree with you Mr Zoonie in they help in certain situations i.e. taking antibiotics but I know you are making sourdough and that's very good for the tummy.

Fair enough for after antibiotics but for all the time it's a con!

Interesting article. Thanks for posting. as its good to explore all these avenues -but since I have just cracked making sourdough bread, I think I'll stick with that -not least because yeast has been so difficult to get hold of recently!

in reply to Bluetop

Thank you and it really is. I'm not doubting that they'll work for some people but think we need to be careful what we buy. Yes agree, sourdough is amazing, I love it.

I take 32 custom supplements for my blood Type daily, after having blood work done years ago by my medical Dr. which later showed many flags. even though I thought I was ingesting a very healthy diet. A good quality prebiotic/probiotic combo capsule is important to gut health, which is 69 percent of your immune health. My blood type diet does not allow me to eat any dairy or foods that have probiotics in them, so supplementation is important for me. The Billion dollar Pharmaceutical industry, which includes some paid Dr.s will put out information saying that a lot of natural supplements are not good to take. I thank GOD for the green garden whole food supplement of great quality that are available to me.

in reply to RLN-overcomer

Your system sounds as complicated as mine. I'm following the low fodmap diet for IBS and it's working really well but whilst following the diet I've got to be very careful with fermented foods although I'm absolutely fine with my homemade sourdough bread which is good. I've taken quite a few different probiotics before and they've not done anything for me and I've ended up throwing a few away.

I do agree with natural supplements but you need to know what works for you and it's not easy. I was taking a wholefood supplement and it was upsetting my system. It's going to take a while for me to see what I can and cannot have but it'll be worth it in the end.

I take a high dose G.M.P certified ( prebiotic/probiotic ) capsule. Just like pharmaceutical drugs, you have to take the right amount of a natural supplements for your bio-chemistry , body weight, and yes your bodies absorption rate. Years ago I had extensive blood work done by my medical Dr. who said he would humor me, and have it done without cost to me. At that time the report came back showing I had several too low, too high flags, and borderline flags. My blood work after my natural supplements were added to my diet 6 months later was now perfect. I have no high or low flags anymore. I use 32 custom G.M.P whole food vitamins, mineral supplements ,and pea protein powders. I know people who will spend $500-$750 for full panel blood work that my Dr. allowed for me, with no out of pocket cost to me. My Dr. was impressed by my results to say the least. I hope/pray you will enjoy your day, and that you will have complete healing for your foot.

I'm really pleased you've got the right natural medication for you, that's really good. Unfortunately I cant go anywhere near pea protein as it upsets my tummy big time. The low fodmap diet though is doing me a big favour as I'm so much better.

Thank you, my foot is slowly but surely getting there.🙏🌈
