I was enjoying myself this morning rereading Ted Sturgeon's Microcosmic God, when he referred to raising a number to the zeroth power. I first read it back in the late 1960s, so I was on my own then. But bless the internet, I was able to find a math for dummies video, and WOW! I got to remember what a joy math class was, and the beautiful logic that permeates all.

So for any and all...

The information/video was very interesting. Thank you for sharing it. I will have to see if they have one using Algebra. When I was in school, Algebra was my best math class I was really good at in high school. :-)

Good afternoon (for me in the U.S. anyway) Activity2004,

In high school, I loved Plane Geometry. I aced every test all year. Because from the first lesson, the beautiful theorems made me feel I'd come home.

I'm not surprised you found it interesting. I have noticed that you write clearly, therefore think clearly. I suspect there's a connection to clear thought and doing well in math. What do you think?

It's hard to say. I had an Algebra Teacher who taught the class really well and most of us passed every test we had each semester. The teacher made the class fun and easy to understand. :-)

My favorite teachers were always my math teachers. I remember my Algebra teacher starting the first lesson by chalking on the board:

2 + 2 = 4

2 + 2 = x

"There is no reason we use 'x' he explained. It's arbitrary."

Then:

2 + x = 4

Everyone loved him. He made difficult concepts fun and easy.

It's 2 for the answer. :-)

Have you used algebra since leaving school?

I've used Algebra here and there. It's easier for me than most math functions. :-)

in reply to Activity2004

I don't think I used it at all after school.

In my job, you have to use some math to get the totals. :-)

Algebra?

I do that since it's easier for me. I work in a Senior Center for the County Government, but we're closed until further notice because of the COVID 19.

Fair enough.. Enjoy your time off. 😊

Thank you for saying that. Really appreciate it very much. Been away since mid-March.

in reply to Activity2004

Me too, but I think I'll be back to work soon.

Working with Seniors is risky right now since they can have issues when COVID 19 is around and I'm actually on the risk list/pre-existing conditions.

in reply to Activity2004

Yes, I have friends that work with seniors.

You must be doing a lot of knitting then?

I read a lot and go on the computer during the day. I also talk to my brother and his family. They called today on Video Chat and we talked this afternoon at 3:45 pm. Talked about how things were going today. :-)

in reply to Activity2004

I talk to family on video chat too they all live in other countries so it nice to see them and talk.

I don't read much these days I'm usually up to something else, I go walking a lot and exercise.

😊

That's fantastic news. My walking is mostly up and down the steps in the house for now. I also try to reorganize everything so it's not piling up here and there.

in reply to Activity2004

What would be piling up?

Activity2004 profile image
Activity2004 in reply to

Old magazines/newspapers, things that need to be donated eventually, etc.. :-)

in reply to Activity2004

Oh right, who would you donate them too?

Activity2004 profile image
Activity2004 in reply to

I would have to see what would be open, then see if that place can pick up everything from the front door/step area.

in reply to Activity2004

What kind of place would take them?

Good Will, maybe.

in reply to Activity2004

Ok, that's good even though I don't know what it is. 😏😉

It's like a thrift store. We have a few near my house and one close to the center. :-)

Almost time to get ready for dinner here. :-)

in reply to Activity2004

Ok I got it now, that's very good, someone else can enjoy them after you.. 😀

I used to enjoy Maths, although I was slow at it. However, when it got to Algebra my brain just said NOPE!

I found out much later that I am dyscalculic, and the abstract nature of Algebra stumped me. I am a visual learner, so I have to use ways to work around it.

Cheers, Midori
